Description
When Lara was only 16, she was tutored in archaeology by Professor Werner Von Croy, a world-famous archaeologist. Skip forward now, to find Lara in Egypt, minding her own business until a pool of quicksand pulls her underground, deep into an ancient tomb. Here she unwittingly releases the evil god Set, and for the rest of the game her ultimate aim is to recapture him and return him to his prison. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation follows her quest through 43 levels, all set in the same underground world, so the story moves as seamlessly and effortlessly as the famous Tomb Raider herself.

In Tomb Raider Chronicles, Lara is still missing in Egypt and there is no word about her whereabouts. Fearing the worst, her closest friends arrange a service in her honor and to share their insights about some of Lara’s more mysterious exploits. Tomb Raider Chronicles offers new insights into the past adventures of Lara Croft along with a host of new weapons such as the grappling hook gun and a sniper rifle. If you feel creative and want to make your own adventures, the official Tomb Raider Level Editor is included with the game.

  • Includes Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and Tomb Raider Chronicles.
  • Utilize new moves to overcome obstacles: walk along tightropes, swing across parallel bars, and stealthily attack your enemies with silent hand-to-hand combat takedowns.
  • Explore tombs as a teenage Lara Croft discovering her roots as an adventurer.
  • Highly interactive environments: light torches, swing from ropes, and kick down doors.

Classic Tomb Raider in final iteration

While most players will choose other parts of the series as their favourite game, I really enjoyed both The Last Revelation and Chronicles pretty much. Both upgrade Lara with new movement. In The Last Revelation, she learns swinging with ropes, which is indeed a bit clunky, but partially fixed in Chronicles, and also to climb poles. Chronicles also adds the ability to somersault down from an elevated niche, as well as thightrope walking. And it feels just great. Regarding the levels, both games could not be more different. The Last Revelation is located just in Egypt, while previous games usually had levels around the world. However, the ability and necessity to change between levels as often as you want at certain points generates a feeling of a much bigger world, though you might lost track of what to do and where to go next. Chronicles on the other hand presents four independent chapters about adventures of Lara Croft. I liked especially the last one, where Lara infiltrates a skyscraper to take an artifact. Chronicles sufferes from little time under development. Some parts feel empty and unfinished. Which is sad, but it is still enjoyablle.

Good, but not great

If you want the classic Tomb Raider experience, I strongly suggest to stick to 1, 2 and 3. This two however... I have mixed feelings about them. A lot of people give too much praise to TR4 for being return to the roots, set entirely on Egypt, and about nothing but exploring ancient tombs. While that's true and good, for me, it doesn't feel like the originals at all. You don't get the Croft Manor this time, which served as tutorial level, and also as a place to mess around. The satisfaction of beating a level is gone, with level being more like liked areas, so no statistics and the end of each one. Some of this areas are massive, meaning a lot of backtracking if you don't know where to go first. It's just impossible to beat the game without a guide, let alone finding all of the secrets, speaking of which... you don't know how many are per level, so you will only know if you found them all at the end of the entire game, and your reward for finding all of them is.... NOTHING, NADA. Given how impossible it is to this, they should've at least give you and extra level. As for Chronicles, again, no Croft Manor, but at least this time the turorial is a section of the first level, with explanations in real time without interrupting you, and you can skip it entirely if you want. Also, no statistics at the end of each level, but at least can know how many secrets are if you found at least one, and there is a reward for finding them all. Its also more straight forward, never requiring to backtrack too much if you realize you are missing something. Each campaigns occur in different parts of the world giving some nice variety in scenarios. The first section feels absolutely like a classic tomb raider game, where the rest dives more into TR2 and TR3 territory, with the last level taken out of a James Bond Movie. All in all, a good package, but you should definetly play the first 3 first, and wait for a sale on this one.

Super Clunky

I'll have to give it to age, because many PS1 games back then had just as clunky controls, but Last Revelation today is nearly unplayable to me even with a gamepad
