Oh, back when Rainbow Six was awesome. Before 3 came out. :P

Ugh, I played the frak out of this classic. I loved this one and Rogue Spear. They both just were so difficult it would scare the crap out of me whenever I'd round a corner into an enemy I wasn't expecting because it would take a realistic amount of shots to get killed. You get a shot or two in you and you're dead. You could fully plan out your movements and actions or just set a single point and wing it. If you got used to planning your teams you could easily coordinate attacks on areas and sweep in and save the day. It's challenging and rough but it's incredibly rewarding when you do it all successfully and don't lose anyone. Unlike many players I'm sure, I'd always make sure I NEVER lose anyone on any of my teams, haha. Which made it pretty rough. The game is very sim based and works more realistically than other shooters but this works well for this game. It was tough and fun as well as memorable. This is a game that sadly after Rogue Spear was changed to the less realistic Rainbow Six 3 and it's sequels. I think the series was BEST in the first two games and their expansions. Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear are both pretty hard but if you LOVE that feeling of accomplishment when you FINALLY get the perfect run through a level, THIS is the game for you. It's about as perfect as it gets. However, those with widescreen monitors make note, there are NO widescreen resolutions unless GOG included them here. I personally still have my disc of the game and just play from that but if GOG added the new widescreen resolutions then there should be no problem. Rogue Spear supported widescreen but this first game sadly did not. During my personal search for a fix, I only found crap for RS: Vegas. In fact if anyone out there reading this knows of a widescreen fix for the first R Six PLEASE let me know. Haha. Either way, widescreen support or not, this game SHOULD be played. It is great and worth your time. It's certainly taken plenty of mine over the years. ^_^

The king of tactical shooters

Based on the novel "Rainbow Six" by Tom Clancy, Red Storm reinvents the books in way that is not only more entertaining(arguably) but also gives a better and unique perspective on the novel itself. Some bits and pieces were added in for extra flare and to give the game a longer life. But at the end of all this you have a really well done game. Tactically rich and full of replay value, tagged along with meticulous and methodical strategy, this game is #1 when it comes to the FPS genre. While not boasting with graphic fidelity or boundary pushing polygonal design, the simplicity of this games look doesn't matter too much when you have gameplay with more depth and complexity than modern shooters. I've played many games in the Battlefield and Call of Duty series, but after maybe 2 to 3 hours the monotonous of both these series shine through. Bland, uninteresting, and often the same copy/paste action. Rainbow Six(1998) actually provides a unique challenge and offers more strategy to the player, you can create an action plan before each mission, create rally points or points for command and engagement, etc. The game also focuses heavily on real world scenarios that take clear thinking before playing. This is not a game where you go in guns hot and have reckless misfortune, time matters and careful execution is key. One slight mistake can lead to a bomb exploding, a hostage dying, or the VIP of the mission escaping. Suppressors and equipment DO matter. You don't know how many FPS games these days provide the player with grade A equipment, but it doesn't truly matter if you have the gun skill of a pro. Here, all you really need is patience and brain power to carry out the mission. 20 years strong, this game still holds true to being one of the best games ever made. A game deserving of a remaster, but has been long forgotten by players. I'm only 22 as i write this, i've played all versions. But the PC is the best. All missions and better UI. Definitely a most own game. :)

Not aged well

So, this site ist called Good Old Games - that can stand for two things: 1. Old games that were great when they came out or 2. Old games that, despite the aged technology, are still a lot of fun to play today. Sadly, in my opinion, Rainbow Six only falls in the first category. The reason for this is simple: pathfinding. Its horrible. Not a single mission goes by were i don't have to redo the plan multiple times only because of pathfinding issues. Yes, you can circle through your teams and unstuck them manually most of the time, but there are missions were time is of crucial importance. Lets look at something you encounter every mission: a floor with a lot of rooms on both sides. Naturally, you plan that your teams check every room for badies, so they dont get shoot in the back. The game even encourages it with the 'clear' waypoint. Unfortunately, this results in your teams getting stuck in every single room. So, about ten times a mission. So, I know the game is old, and that how pathfinding was back then - non existant. But, at the end of the day, I just like having fun. And its not fun to yell at your monitor*. *except for Super Meat Boy

THE classic Tactical FPS

If you're here, you likely don't need to be sold on it. Was so happy to finally play this game after all of these years. I tested this out with Windows 10 and it worked beautifully. Some of the other reviews complained it didn't work, but didn't have a single issue. Would be nice to see Rogue Spear and all of its add-ons join GOG.

As awesome as it gets.

At the time I am writing this review, only a few minutes ago was a greeted with an overwhelming sense of fulfillment as the end cut-scene played. And I can safely say that everything building up to it was nothing short of a blast! Upon start-up you are shown the masterminds behind this game and are then greeted with an epic cut-scene detailing the setting or plot of the game. This cut-scene also gives you an excellent example of the games spectacular orchestral soundtrack that you'll be hearing a lot during the game (even on the loading screens!). You have a choice to play through the training missions or jump right into the game at the start. I strongly recommend doing the training as it is vital that you know the ins and outs of the controls. It is a tactical shooter game after all. The controls are as solid and tight as any good shooter game out there, and are customizable anyway if they don't suit your preferences. Each mission is preceded by briefing and planning in which you are given information on your current mission, then succeeded by choosing who is going to be on your team (which has a limit of eight people), what equipment your team will be having and what your strategy will be. The last being the most important phase of planning. This adds a large amount of depth to the game. While scary looking at first, it won't take long to know how to plan your strategy. Once you get on to the actual game you'll find yourself immersed in an intense, thrilling, and suspenseful experience. Potential one-hit kills (and I don't mean just head-shots!) and jumpy terrorists are put together to make a rather challenging game, but remember, you can kill them in one shot too! The game also has a useful auto-aim feature which helps balance out this difficulty. I would go into more detail, but I'll leave you to explore the rest. So, in conclusion, if you like games, play Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six.
