When Rainbow Six used to be great
However, 4 stars as this lack so much quality that was offered by Rogue Spear which succeeded it. I wouldn't mind seeing that added on GOG later on. Back to the topic, this game offers all the classic gameplays you could expect from when Rainbow Six used to be what it was called. You could choose your team mates and if one died, they were gone from that save game permanently. And you could carefully plan your AI team's route on the map. Back at this time i can only imagine how advanced this game was for its time.

Great game, bad re-release
How to say it...The game is good. Very good even. You can read about it all around, even from most liked/useful review here. There are hardly any other games on the market like first R6 games, with same or similar quality. 4 stars I would give to this one, 5 would be deserved for Rogue Spear as I believe it's being superior with things like leaning option. Rest of the review will be mainly about technical side. Have it in mind, this release deserves 2 stars at best. The game suffers from being neglected. As somebody with many old games I'm fine with fixing them to boot up but...This one goes beyond that. Some missions are outright broken. Not spawning enemies, hostages being invisible and showing only on the minimap, making it impossible to escort them and thus impossible to finish the mission. It depends on difficulty you play on as well from what I managed to dig out. Also, player and teammates seemingly sometimes get stuck on spawn; their AI tends to turn off, usually near doors. GoG release supposedly has 2 corrupted/broken map files, I heard CD release doesn't suffer from this. Can't confirm myself however so take it with grain of salt. Configuration of such thing as mouse sensitivity requires you to use regedit; it's far from good. Prepare to use dgVoodoo if you want to play it on anyhow modern system. Alt + tab combo doesn't seem to work (this is understandable considering the game's age), Windowed option in regedit doesn't appear for me; seems like it's broken as well. Overall technical side is simply disappointing. If you even manage to run it, and many seem to report being unable to, you are going to run into multiple problems. So it's outright "not recommended" if you just want to hop in and play. Hence why I said this release deserves 2 stars. All that being said, if you are willing to spent some time repairing what's broken, it's really good title. Takes a while to get into it but it's really rewarding. Game? Recommended. GoG version? Hardly.

A great title that needs love
Rainbow Six is a true classic and an amazing tactical shooter that isn't for those with zero patience. Time and effort make the difference as you plan out each mission route, equipment, and the tempo. This is a game that deserves every minute you can give it to experience But, that is all on my *original experience playing it on PC and N64.* The biggest glaring issue right now is, it DOES NOT work or run on Windows 7, the game installs and opens fine but then all I receive is a black screen where I can move my mouse around with the game crashing. I give Rainbow 6: 5/5 stars for my original play back then but as of today with this current version, I give it 1 star. I will give it 5/5 if it runs

Some things are better left in the 90s.
The OG Rainbow Six sparked my love for tactical shooters and for good reason: It's a classic. But, it isn't a timeless classic. This is a pretty lazy version of the game. It would be nice to see this game be given a little more love to bring it up to date for modern systems. What we have here is a game made in '98 trying to run on systems and standards 20 years out of its league. Is it still fun? Very much so, but its limitations are very much apparent. We often forget Rainbow Six, so it's nice to see it on offer. But, the reason we forget? Rogue Spear was transcendent.
