Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.
As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.
Garrett never paid the price for anything… until now.

Honestly a good looking, enjoyable, stealth based 3d/first person game. Lots of treasure to find and a good few routes to each treasure are available. Story isn't the most amazing ever but there's nothing terrible there either. Have not really played the older titles, and excluding those from my point of view, I think it's a pretty good game.
Obviously, it might not line up with the expectations of those who love the older games, but for others, it's definitely a good game and at £20.00 I'd say it's well worth the gamble for anyone not predisposed to dislike it for not lining up with the prior series.
The developers were smart not to make this part of the original continuity, but found a balance by setting it far in the future from the those games.
There are many good features to like in Thief, but they can't quite come together to replicate the feeling of the original games. They tried to add a more immersive, tactile feel to the game with the lock picking and breaking into windows, but the latter becomes repetitive and annoying as the game drags on. The voice actor for Garrett does a fair approximation of the original actor, who is still missed.
If more time was spent in perfecting the game, it could have been a tremendous hit. Instead, the future of the series is still in doubt ten years after its release.
Hopefully someone takes up the mantle and returns the series to its former glory.
I finished it at least 20 times since release (on x360, xOne, Steam, GOG), I know it's a hated game, I have yet to hear a genuinely good argument against it. Their loss tbh.
For those interested in the gameplay more than fitting in with the "purists", here are a few cool things:
- you can customize difficulty to a great degree
- you can finish the ENTIRE game with NO alert, NO kills, NO upgrades, in the hardest difficulty while getting ALL the loot.
Not many games let you ever do that. Even "special events" do let you sneak by and you will NEVER be forced into combat of non-stealth BS.
This is a stealth game that doesn't assume that you'll get bored and you want an action sequence in the middle of it, to keep the dopamine flawing.
There is a boss (which usually suck in stealth games), this one is a matter of learning a safe path leveraging shadows. No "jump over the laser with precise timing" like the end boss of DOOM 2016... No gimmick, you came to sneak around, you'll sneak around from START TO FINISH. I can't overstate how much I appreciate that.
Great replayability thanks to the customizable difficulty. It gives you so much control over how challenging the game will be. Tons of options for HUD, too! You can remove almost every help overlay.
Games works great with AZERTY, and 21:9 aspect ration out of the gate. It's stable, runs GREAT on any computer from the past decade. Very cheap.
If you've skipped the game for the past 11 years because of what the youtubers told you... I feel for you. But you can fix that for a couple bucks :)
If you're not used to FPS games, DO NOT play this game.
It can cause motion sickness even with a high FOV because there's too much camera movement.
Completing it is tiring because you have to redo everything if you miss even one thing.
Overall the game is decent, with only a few minor bugs and some controls or prompts that sometimes don’t work properly.
