Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.
As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.
Garrett never paid the price for anything… until now.

Thief: Tales From The City digital comic (EN/FR) & OST
Thief is one of many reboots resembling the original without truly living up to it. The two biggest downsides compared to the original games are the simple, enclosed levels that lack the exploration fans expected, and the restrictions in movement. You can only jump at specific points, and you can only lean when in cover, making peaking around doors or through drapes difficult. You also can't peak over objects.
Other than that, Thief is enjoyable as a slow crawler. Many may critise the repetitive animations that play for every action, picking up gold, opening doors or drawers ect., but they are clearly intentionaly designed to make you move slower and more carefully.
With better level design, Thief could have been great, but as is, it is a decent stealth game. Stealth fans should give it a shot, non-fans would be better served trying Dishonored insted.
... especially given the circumstances the devs had to face during planning and production.
Most reviews are highly subjective. This one as well.
I enjoyed the game.
The art was really good, the atmosphere was consistent, gritty, dark, dipping into creepy, backed strongly by the music.
I had no gripe with gameplay/mechanics, though some elements felt less rewarding/focused - but overall it was a solid story and adventure with enough great elements to keep the game engaging, cohesive, interesting and well paced - certainly enjoyable.
I would have appreciated a more established storyline for the relationship between Erin and Garrett - which is a focus in the game, driving quest and outcome - as well as for the mystery of the city and the "power" material. (There is a comic titled "Thief - Tales from the City" giving a bit more context - you can find a decent read on Youtube.)
The side characters were neat - I even would have welcomed more interactions between e.g. Garrett and Basso or the Queen of Beggars, learning a bit about their turfs and ways.
The City itself.also deserves mention as a character.
My only real gripe is the tiresome traversing of the city, usually from one far end to the other and back.
I enjoyed the sneaking, and would not have resorted to fighting in a stealth game, if the following was done right:
The city is a big, higly patrolled, segmented maze, with not all showing up on the map. Challenge for wayfinding is truly fun (at first), but once found - with such scale and frequent back&forth tracking (esp. with side quests) - indicating crucial segment passages would have meant a lot less slog for me, and better chance of replay.
That said, main missions each have their own huge one-time maps, so there's plenty exploration.
All in all, I found this a good game on it's own terms.
And if there will ever be a next Thief game, I hope it will be an even better one.
This game has established the go-to way for me to experience stealth games. The 1st person view makes sneaking, listening to your environment but also switching from cover to cover or shadow to shadow absolutely intense. Loved everything about it.
Also the controller support is top-notch with almost(!) perfect force feedback. Lock-picking gives you the option to listen and look around with your right stick, while searching for the right spot with the left stick and resp. force feedback. When guards are patrolling around you, this creates an incredibly intense atmosphere.
Besides the parcour movement, which is also present, feels great and reminded me a lot of Dying Light 2 - minus the Kung Fu Style Drop Kicks of course, LOL.
Honorable mention for the puzzles, some were done great, with my favorite being the "Heart of the Lion".
That's for the positive, which kept me coming back for more.
Now the downsides, which almost made me uninstall and quit my playthrough:
The story switches from intriguing and fascinating - chapters 3 and 4 were my absolute favorites with their memorable set pieces - to predictable and boring after the 5th act. Which is being amplified by bad pacing. Latter one is making the last 1.5 chapters feel kinda "irrelevant" and made me wishing for the game to end, which was kinda unfortunate.
When it comes to story presentation: Some of the cutscenes, which are not presendet in-engine, but via videos, look kinda bad. Some are even interupted (or haven't been completed rendering during production?! LOL)
which doesn't do the the main issue with the story any favors.
You also have two boss fights, which feel out of place and kinda bad.
From the tech perspective: XBox pads only.
Having a PS4 or PS5 like pad? The did not work for me.
But on the other hand the performace in 4k Is amazing with all maxed out, making the game quite amazing and radiating incredible atmosphere.
Long Story short: Great game, bad narrative. If you like stealth game experiences and environmental puzzles, I'd highly suggest to NOT SLEEP ON THIS!
Especially on sale.
Thief is a stealth game where you play as Garrett the Master Thief, caught between warring factions and investigating the disappearance of his protege. One unique thing is that this game feels like a stand-alone sequel and soft reboot of the franchise. You have characters with the same names, and also references the events and locations of the originals, so maybe there's a reincarnation thing going on.
I played this game as my entry to the franchise, and coming back after the originals I can see why it's a disappointment. Levels feel very monotonous and linear, while the original had more color, variation, and cooler fantasy elements. The original was also hailed as an immersive sim, with emergent gameplay and freedom to do things. But here it's restrictive, like how you can only jump and use rope arrows at certain spots, very railroaded. It felt like a dumbed-down Dishonored. There's a hub area, but due to the bland color palette and same-looking areas, it's kinda difficult to navigate unlike in Deadly Shadows. You can replay missions, but you have to navigate the city to find the (unmarked) mission start point.
If you see Thief as a standalone stealth game, it's decent. But compared to the originals, it's a step down in almost every aspect, except maybe having more realistic graphics. Still, it's quite fun if you enjoy stealth. And the GOG version comes with full DLCs, including bonus equipment and upgrades as well as a fun bank heist mission.
I got this for free from an Amazon Prime giveaway, including all the DLC. The price was right.
I've played every single version of Thief going back to the very first one. All of them had pros and cons. It's hard for me to find pros for this one. I guess the graphics are still pretty good, even 11 years later.
The City is cramped and navigating it is a chore.
The mechanics of the game are weird. It's like they tried to smash to different visions for the game into one.
Plot. Early on, it seems like it makes sense. At the end, you realize it's like three plots that they again just mashed together without resolving any of them. I won't spoil the ending, but I can tell you it's the most underwhelming ending of any game I've ever played.
