People are Strange...First Impressions.

First thing to be said about The Real Texas? It's certainly unique and refreshing, with a slew of memorable characters, a surprisingly engaging soundtrack; but it certainly won't be to everyone's tastes. It's essentially a more free-form adventure game, much of the gameplay involves simply exploring and finding things that flesh out the well-realised world; however, that's about it. There are obstacles in the form of enemies, but combat doesn't really amount to more than drawin' yer sidearm and clicking, and the health system (if you can call it that) is a bit weird and cumbersome In addition, the aesthetic appealed to me, but some might find it a little too lo-fi for their tastes; perhaps understandable considering it's pretty much a solo project from Kitty Lambda games. However, I feel like with those criticisms I'd be approaching it in the wrong way; it's still fun, engaging and once again totally unique; but certainly benefits from being approached from a certain mindset.

I have nothing much to say that hasn't already been said, but I'll give this my 5 stars as well. I wouldn't call it a perfect game by any means, but definitely more enjoyment than one should get for 8.99. This game is very surreal and immersive. I didn't see what all the hype was about at first, but it didn't take long to suck me in and maintain my interest. It made me care about the characters, despite them being rectangles with zero articulation. The weirdest part about The Real Texas is how light hearted and kid-friendly it will seem for a few hours before a character randomly drops an F-bomb, or exposes themselves. It makes me wonder if it has a target audience at all, but nonetheless it is an experience I'm grateful to have taken. I doubt I'll ever forget my stay in Strange Texas.

Guess I just don't get it

Look, I don't like hand holding in games. I don't expect to be led form A to B. But this game... Why am I here? What am I doing? I have absolutely no sense of purpose. I just kind of fart around, sometimes I find some objects and manage to open a door or something, but it doesn't seem to further anything. Am I accomplishing anything? Heck if I know. Give me more story, more characters, something to keep me invested! I don't even know what this game wants to be- an RPG, an adventure game? I've wondered back and forth through countless dungeons im my time and saved many a planet, but I don't think I've ever felt so lost playing something so simple. It's not like there is a million options here, but maybe that's part of the problem- with nothing better to do I just keep going, watch my cardboard cutout hero bob around some more. Yeah, I don't really "get" the graphics either. Again, I don't need everything to look like Witcher 2, in fact Driftmoon is so far my favourite game of 2013 and it doesn't exactly run on Cry Engine 3. But I don't get what's with this blocky, cardboard box-like world. It's not pixelated nostalgia after all. And it really doesn't help when the act of exploration rewards you with nothing but more blocky, stiff cutouts. If You like what You see looking at the screens- great. But if You don't, take it into consideration. It does make the game feel really boring.

Full Of Heart And Wit

The Real Texas is a real charmer. It's gameplay is best described as "Ultima 6 meets Zelda" but its narrative and setting are considerable more imaginative than either of these inspirations. It has a great sense of humor, but there's also a weight to the happenings that slowly reveals itself. The game also has the best walking animation I've ever seen. You can't go wrong.

Only one complaint

I was impressed. Game mechanics are intuitive, and even after I'd have my fill, I'd be in the kitchen going "Oh, wait, I could use that new thing over THERE, couldn't I?" and I'd be firing it back up. There's a lot to do, and no hand-holding. And not a lot of need to. Exploration was generally rewarded. The lost & found was always there in case I discarded a quest item "early" and didn't remember where. Clever way to keep the player from leaving the game in a bad state. I'm not really wanting to say a lot about the graphics, because... they work. It's simple, (uuuugly) but it gets the job done. No, my real complaint is that the targetting is a little bit flaky. It's probably most obvious when trying to pull carrots hoping for a radish, but it's fairly common on small items. It's not a deal-breaker, just turns the cowboy a bit ham-handed now and then. The good: Some incredibly clever moments... I wrestled a wizard. I played breakout during combat... with the same interface. And only got mildly mauled by bears. And I can't explain this game to anyone I know without sounding like more of a raving lunatic than usual. XD
