The Outer Worlds Expansion Pass is available here

The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

KEY FEATURES

The player-driven story RPG

In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.

You can be flawed, in a good way

New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.

Lead your companions

During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.

Explore the corporate colony

Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

More of the same

Played it on Xbox. At first was intrigued by the setting and looks... but then didn't find any substance on it to keep playing it. Just another FPS with dialogs and tons of "do this, do that" game.

Actually rather fun

Played this via Gamepass and enjoyed it immensely. It really is the bastard offspring of Fallout (corporation screwing folks with own agenda) and Borderlands (humour) to me. Story did drop off half way, but by then I was still being amused by everyone, so it was forgiven. Not played DLC, so don't know what that is like. Openworld-ish - some areas are closed behind quests, but once you get those you can go play there whenever, However some areas that look like you can just jump over - you can't which is annoying. While it does have some flaws, overall this is fun to play, and unlike many other games out there, fairly accessible even without mods (as a legally blind person).

Low budget but amazing

Obsidian is truly great at world building, but just to be clear this is NOT a mass effect type story, there isn't really a tangible big bad enemy in this universe that is morally bankrupt. Its really just a somewhat realistic story of a system of colony worlds struggling for resources while under the knee of board of corrupt corporate powers. They really did a good job driving in that robo-cop vibe, where over time people are brainwashed into thinking that they are nothing but an extension of the products they produce especially on the lower end of the corporate ladder. Of course it wouldn't be obsidian to also have a few pop culture references. All in all a truly fantastic game, I really think if Obsidian just took a page out of Larian's writing style when it comes to character arcs, they would probably be the best writers in the industry.

Totally not Firefly

In short this is a nice New Vegas style CRPG with Firefly atmosphere. Is it as good as New Vegas? Let's see: LIKED * exploration! Very often you start hiking with the aim of finishing a quest, but.. what's over there? Let's take a detour! * quests usually have multiple solutions (violence, stealth-hacking-lockpick, dialog) * the game looks good (except for the faces). Congrats for the armor, weapons and environment * I like combat in this game, much better than New Vegas or Fallout 3 * there are no badly written companions, and I actually liked two of them, which is rare * voiceover is brilliant. Probably the best VO since Bloodlines * you can save everywhere. Good job! DIDN'T LIKE * cities are lifeless: constantly repeated banter; few, mostly idle NPCs; many permanently closed doors * I like the feel of the combat, but the game is too easy * in the last third of the game there are a few annoying fetch quests UNDECIDED * writing quality is not consistent. Mostly better than average, with a few high points * most big quests have an "everyone is happy" ending, which goes against the mood * enemies are level scaled * this is a joke setting. If someone wants mature themes or a realistic representation of "capitalism bad, mkay", look elsewere. By the end of the game it became clear that this is not an AAA game. What it has is good quality, but it misses that final touch. I mean the faction armors look great, but you will start to notice that there are not many non-faction armors. (a Firefly game without a duster?) Marauders look the same in every planet, keep loot in the same containers, live in the same containers. You will hear the same banter over and over from commoners and your crew. There are planets which show up in your navcomp, but you cannot visit them in game. Stuff like that. Alltogether I like this game very much. Worth 60€? Probably not, considering Witcher3 is €30, New Vegas is €20, Deus Ex is €20. Wait for a discount, for ~20 this is a steal.

Get it cheap or feel ripped off

Worth it only when discounted, It all feels OK, just OK. It has some fun, some weapons, some armours, some, some, some. It lacks depth, it all feels very surface.
