There seems to be a trend among horror games to artifically ramp up the difficulty and fear factor by implementing poor controls and camera angles. The Evil within definitely falls into this camp. It just ends up being more frustrating than fun.
The game also suffers from other problems. A poor checkpoint save system, uninteresting enemies, bland characters, and a convoluted story that isn't worth the effort it takes to unravel from deciphering enigmatic notes left laying around.
Save yourself the hassle and watch a Let's Play or something if you really need to know the story. I don't recommend this game.
The game is a great mix of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space, Alone in The Dark and others... is it flawless? No it isn't, there are somem inor bugs here and there, but overall very good game!!!
I loved this game on PS4 but the framerate is not very good and on PS5 at least it is locked at 30fps so is now playable on that console. I bought this from GOG to hopefully make the game work better which it does, locked 60fps apart from a graphical glitch where the shadows flicker in and out when the camera is moving round which make this really hard to play. Shame as I was looking forward to trying this game again
I don't generally like horror games since they usually nerf combat or don't allow you to fight back. Evil Within does not suffer from this issue. Sure, you can sneak around them or hide if that's your cup of tea. I prefer to put bullets in things and kill everything in the map, and Evil Within allows you to do that. No matter how tough or scary the monsters are, if it bleeds, you can kill it. I like that.
Still, it's a horror game, which means it's got all those horror-related themes like darkness, scary sounds, and weird distortions of your perception of reality. I don't personally enjoy this kind of experience, but that's a subjective preference so I won't let that affect the score I give. I only gave Evil Within a chance because I saw that you can shoot things, and it was on sale.
What isn't a matter of subjective taste is that the main villain seems kinda lame. His motivation is laughable. He's like that kid at school who gets bullied and now he's having a power fantasy about getting revenge. lol (BTW, him getting bullied at school is not part of his backstory - he just gives off that vibe).
Also, the story isn't told very well. It left me with a lot of questions. Some things just don't add up and don't make sense, but that's pretty typical of the horror genre.
Anyway, if you like horror games, you'll like this one. If, like me, you don't like horror games, but enjoy shooting things, you'll still get enjoyment out of this game if it's on sale.
Sure the PC port of this game isn't the greatest out there. You need to do quite a bit of tweaking to get it to work properly at 60 FPS, the letterboxing choice is controversial and depending on who you ask they will tell you they either love it or hate it. Thankfully you can choose whichever you prefer in the game settings. The technical issues with the port aside the game itself is one of the best survival horror games out there, some of the game mechanics haven't aged as well for today's standards but even so, if you're a fan of this genre this is a must play.
