Excellent Successor To Resident Evil 4

I'll be updating this review as I play through Evil Within 1, but I'm 22 hours in and only at Chapter 7. True, I'm an extremely deliberate player, almost a perfectionist, but I am finding incredible value in the game. I couldn't disagree with the critics more (like Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation). This game is a VERY worthy spiritual sequel to Resident Evil 4 and Shinji Mikami absolutely delivers the goods once again! One of the main points of criticism for Yahtzee was the impenetrable story. I certainly wouldn't call RE 4's story a masterwork of video game storytelling, and EW 1 is more of the same in my book. SETTINGS True, the game does change settings abruptly. One chapter you're in a disturbing Mental Hospital. Another chapter you're in a village that is eerily reminiscent of the one in the beginning of RE 4 complete with chainsaw wielding madman. Then you're in the ruins of a Medieval Castle complete with beautiful cliffside panorama framed at the last moments of sunset. Some people, like Yahtzee, would find this smacks of a schizophrenic inability to adhere to a cohesive narrative and setting. I think the plot device that allows for the wild change in settings is perfectly reasonable and makes sense within the context of the story. And absolutely allows for the dramatic changes in location. To me, these changes are shocking, interesting and very welcome, adding incredible variety. GAMEPLAY I want to draw attention to the inclusion of the "Trap Disarming" mechanic in the game. I am finding it very cleverly implemented. Some people might feel it ruins the pacing of the game, making it difficult to engage in a "run and gun" style firefight with the zombie like denizens you encounter. My playstyle is very cautious, very deliberate, very conservative, so sneaking around the levels, carefully disarming the traps, is exactly my style. I find the mechanic adds a great extra layer of gameplay, and you even get rewarded with loot for bothering to do so. Nice

Another of Shinji Mikamis masterpiece

Tango Gameworks with mastemind Shinji Mikami just blew my mind with this game. If you crave for the horror back into your mind this game will deliver this. Evil Within take another step forward and makes you shiver from its presentation. Really like the story and what it does to uncover full truth. One of the best experience you can have. It so unique and new. Amazing settings and boss encounters wont let you sit calm while you try to narrow all these horrific dreams. This game reminded me a bit of taste from silent hill 1 and 2 for sure. Fun gameplay mixed with stealth and action approach wont let you snooze. Plus two amazing DLC explain some of the story plot that were left semi unexplained in the main game. I will rate this game 9.5/10 Now the wait begins for Ghostwire Tokyo from Tango Gameworks studio.

Good game, terrible bosses

Hard to say if this game is good or not - the boss fights suck and every single boss leaves you with frustration and anger. It's not that hard, it just sucks. You die either instantly or after a few hits until you "get" the boss and then you move on. This destroys the atmosphere - there is no more horror if you have to do thos fights over and over again. All tension gone, what stays is boredom and lack of motivation. And there are many of them. THe typical gameplay loop is this: Play a chapter, great 30-40 minutes, you love the game. Then a boss fight, you hate the game. Then the chapter ends. The problem is: The end of any game, series, movie or, in this case, chapter decides on how you feel about the medium. And when you play this game and decide to quit for bedtime or dinner or whatever, you always quit with frustration and lose the motivation to continue playing. Without bosses, 4/5 stars. The bosses alone 1/5. So, this game is a subjective 2/5 and an objective 3/5. Continue playing, it stays good. But a game that has a hard time keeping you motivated is not a good game.

have you met your evil within?

Great psychological story, bold concepts regarding mental health issues and how fragile the mind is, how the world within is changed and how it affects other "worlds". Great artwork, monster design and level design, interesting ideeas around mechanics and how they are integrated in gameplay. Haven't met a single error on either steam or gog versions. Difficulty is fair, although i will say that nightmare is a bit ruthless ad i won't even mention Akumu.

One of my favorite games

Runs better than the Steam version of the game because it's DRM-Free. There are a few points in the game that bother me though with level design. There is one point where you have to fight wave after wave of enemies until you get past a door guarded by harpoon turrets. Then there's another point in the game where you have to bunker up and defend your buddy while he disarms a trapped door. Otherwise I've found this game to be a fantastic experience, give or take a few issues given its age.
