Bad design

This is a game that very, very heavily borrows from Resident Evil. We're talking "flash rounds kill small enemies" level. Very similar upgrade system as well. It looks really good, has an immersive atmosphere, and the basic gameplay is fun when you actually get to play it. The rest though, story included, is lacking. This has to be the first game I feel was actively ruined. Basically the game fails to give you enough direction and it suffers greatly for it. The Amnesia devs are right in that you shouldn't kill the player to make a scary game and because of this the game violates this rule hard. For example, as a horror game naturally there are a lot of running sequences or sequences with limited time. But unlike any other horror game I've played I found myself dying at least once in every single one of these situations because I didn't know what the heck to do, or they do some really stupid stuff too like flipping your camera so you can't see forward while you are running and going through a minefield. In fact, these were the only places I died for the most part. The bosses are just ok at best and suffer from the same problems but are usually not immediately lethal (though ammo can get extremely limited). I think the worst part of this though was wandering around the asylum trying to figure out what to look at without any hint because the portal out was blocked. It was okay the first 5 times, but by Ch9 it was getting pretty old. Thanks for wasting my time game.

The recipe for evil

well its simple... a pinch of Saw ( scenery, ambience), Hostel (gore, scenery, ambience), The Suffering (gameplay, screenplay, design) Devil May Cry (screenplay, level design) , Resident Evil 4 ( core idea), Silent Hill 3 & 4 ( heavyl influnece on the story and characters and screenplay), Bioshock ( some enemies, and music) and eve Dead Space ( gameplay, gore) If you like the ingredients above, this is your kind of taste. Its drags itself in the end but it does many thing very so right. this one is not 10/10 because its has some glitches, some poor level design choices and too many ingredients for a game that was supposed to be the revival of Survival Horror. Overall a great entry in the genre, kept from greatness because you can't taste The Evil Within exactly as an concrete idea but mainly as a mix of all that inspired it. 8/10

A decent game, but...

This game does lots of things right, the atmosphere is creepy, the voice acting is great, the controls are good. If you enjoy horror games then this is definitely one to pickup. For me though, this game didn't click, not because of any bad choices or technical problems, but more the story. The first few chapters were very good, cliche but good. I get that it was trying to push a psychological angle, a man coming apart with the unravelling of the plot. But it was done in a way that just kicked me out of the story completely. At about the mid-way point I stopped caring about the story, the characters, or why I was doing something. Luckily the gameplay and environments are good enough to carry the game. Others really like the story, I can see why, for me it was just like when I played Death Stranding. An absolute mish-mash of ideas that are too weird.
