Truly unique and punishing horror

This game has me going ambigious - schizophrenic like the story itself and it scared the living lights out of me. On one hand I really appreciate the uniqueness of what Mikami did here. It's a labour of love, great atomsphere with even greater sound design, very different set-pieces and lots of unique bosses. A truly twisted and demented horror, that is rarely tried or found in other games. In this EW1 is among the best horror games ever made! On the other hand, unfortunately they did not carry through with it to the end in the main game. I loved the stealth aspect but from Chapter 10 on the game becomes an endurance-test action game. From here on, the game pits you into bossfight after bossfight and wave after wave, punishing you for every upgrade-mistake you made before. You will be replaying chapters at least twice anyway, because you need the Gel for upgrades and you need to plan ahead with balancing damage and resources. But you are also rewarded with a truly unique ride! I can see how some are not willing to invest so much time and energy in this, as this game needs to be replayed several times. Maybe even restarted halfway because you upgraded in the wrong order. This game is HARD and unforgiving and I would not blame you using Cheat-Engine. I found EW2 _way easier_ than this. The controls are far less bad as some make it out to be. I guess it's a matter of if you are familiar with the tank-controls of the Playstation 1 era 3D Action-RPGs like Resident Evil, Nightmare Creatures, Silent Hill and the likes. Because the controls exactly feel like that. But what is more important is that the mechanics are consistent and thus can be mastered! The 2 story DLCs are a must because they are delivering important story aspects. They are also even more unsettling than the main game and a completely skill-based hide-and-seek endurance test. With all it's flaws, I can still recommend EW1 wholeheartedly for the daring things it does.

Great game. Reviews are kind of unfair.

This is an excellent game which will deliver tense moments and make you think twice before you make a move. Manage well your resources and you shall be rewarded with powerfull upgrades that will make your adventure more interesting. Every part of this game represents a challenge for you to overcome. The gameplay feels nice, has a very good opressing atmosphere and the visuals are pretty nice. I'm not the kind to despise others, but you should ignore reviews of those who try and see games as Resident Evil and Silent Hill in this game. This is The Evil Within, it's a different game, not an spin off of those. This game will deliver fear to you in it's own way. Personally, this is a must play.

A good game with a lot of problems

I liked this game a lot... but the game have serious issues speceally in the gameplay and in it's design. The game offers variety on the situations in some of them the game really shines creating a really good experiences but they're just a few, the rest if they are not working with some issues, they are working really bad. The game puts you in many situations in which the systems that the player has access to are not ready to face said situation. Creating a really frustrating experience most of the time. the sloopy controls and some mechanics that barely works like the stealth they just add more problems to the game, and sometimes the game just doesn't make clear what it expect from the player, like in some bossfights in which the game give you the resources to kill it, but you just are not allowed to do it because the game want something else from you at the time and is hard to see the answers sometimes. and the story doesnt give you a lot. barely And the story that rarely tells you what's going on or tells you cryptically, combining it with the fact that you have to look for the story in collectibles in the form of documents and other things can make you lose interest in this. But. some segments are really well made. And when you can finally fight the bosses, these really are a challenge that will test your ability to manage resources in order to find a way to kill him and the general bewilderment surrounding the context and environment of the game really increases the tension of the game... I will put it this way, the game seeks to be old and current at the same time, mixing many mechanics of survival horror games that have been going on for years and htye do not work quite well, to this we add sloopy controls and many frustrating segments, but if you are able to ignore this, you can find a very entertaining game that is really trying to make new things

Excellent Successor To Resident Evil 4

I'll be updating this review as I play through Evil Within 1, but I'm 22 hours in and only at Chapter 7. True, I'm an extremely deliberate player, almost a perfectionist, but I am finding incredible value in the game. I couldn't disagree with the critics more (like Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation). This game is a VERY worthy spiritual sequel to Resident Evil 4 and Shinji Mikami absolutely delivers the goods once again! One of the main points of criticism for Yahtzee was the impenetrable story. I certainly wouldn't call RE 4's story a masterwork of video game storytelling, and EW 1 is more of the same in my book. SETTINGS True, the game does change settings abruptly. One chapter you're in a disturbing Mental Hospital. Another chapter you're in a village that is eerily reminiscent of the one in the beginning of RE 4 complete with chainsaw wielding madman. Then you're in the ruins of a Medieval Castle complete with beautiful cliffside panorama framed at the last moments of sunset. Some people, like Yahtzee, would find this smacks of a schizophrenic inability to adhere to a cohesive narrative and setting. I think the plot device that allows for the wild change in settings is perfectly reasonable and makes sense within the context of the story. And absolutely allows for the dramatic changes in location. To me, these changes are shocking, interesting and very welcome, adding incredible variety. GAMEPLAY I want to draw attention to the inclusion of the "Trap Disarming" mechanic in the game. I am finding it very cleverly implemented. Some people might feel it ruins the pacing of the game, making it difficult to engage in a "run and gun" style firefight with the zombie like denizens you encounter. My playstyle is very cautious, very deliberate, very conservative, so sneaking around the levels, carefully disarming the traps, is exactly my style. I find the mechanic adds a great extra layer of gameplay, and you even get rewarded with loot for bothering to do so. Nice
