Truly unique and punishing horror
This game has me going ambigious - schizophrenic like the story itself and it scared the living lights out of me. On one hand I really appreciate the uniqueness of what Mikami did here. It's a labour of love, great atomsphere with even greater sound design, very different set-pieces and lots of unique bosses. A truly twisted and demented horror, that is rarely tried or found in other games. In this EW1 is among the best horror games ever made! On the other hand, unfortunately they did not carry through with it to the end in the main game. I loved the stealth aspect but from Chapter 10 on the game becomes an endurance-test action game. From here on, the game pits you into bossfight after bossfight and wave after wave, punishing you for every upgrade-mistake you made before. You will be replaying chapters at least twice anyway, because you need the Gel for upgrades and you need to plan ahead with balancing damage and resources. But you are also rewarded with a truly unique ride! I can see how some are not willing to invest so much time and energy in this, as this game needs to be replayed several times. Maybe even restarted halfway because you upgraded in the wrong order. This game is HARD and unforgiving and I would not blame you using Cheat-Engine. I found EW2 _way easier_ than this. The controls are far less bad as some make it out to be. I guess it's a matter of if you are familiar with the tank-controls of the Playstation 1 era 3D Action-RPGs like Resident Evil, Nightmare Creatures, Silent Hill and the likes. Because the controls exactly feel like that. But what is more important is that the mechanics are consistent and thus can be mastered! The 2 story DLCs are a must because they are delivering important story aspects. They are also even more unsettling than the main game and a completely skill-based hide-and-seek endurance test. With all it's flaws, I can still recommend EW1 wholeheartedly for the daring things it does.
