You play as the titular Bard, a roguish, manipulative and lewd songster whose priorities in life are the acquisition of material wealth and carnal pleasures. The Bard's pretty sarcastic by nature, but you get to decide just how scathing he is by selecting 'Nice' or 'Sarky' responses. Watch out you don't get too cocky though; folk you've upset may come back to haunt you.

During his raucous adventures, the Bard recruits a motley band of eccentrics and misfits to help in his ignoble cause. Enemies can be defeated using traditional or magical weapons and you can also use the Bard's dulcet tones to summon creatures. If you're tired of saving humankind or bored of games that take themselves a bit too seriously, The Bard's Tale could very well be for you.

Okay for a quick play

Not a great game, but not a lousy one, either. Game play is completely linear: Go here first, fight this guy, level up, go here next. Little to no open world exploration. In this way, it's very much like to original Bard's Tale games I played as a kid. The humor is amusing, though I found myself skipping many of the songs. There were a few parts where I laughed out loud, such as when a ghost informs you that there's something from the underworld that wants to speak with you, and it turns out to be low level monsters you killed earlier in the game. A big ceremony, and it's just some idiot trow from the first level that pops up. For some reason I found that more amusing than I should. Buy this game on sale. It's inferior to Might & Magic VI, VII and VII just as the original Bard's Tale games were inferior to M&M I, II and III, but it's still worth a play through.

On the fence

Ok, after 4 hours I'm not sure I wantt to go back into the game, the dry humor is ok, it works to set up the main character as a cynical vagrant that is looking for fortune and the world is fantastic, the idea of who knows how many "chosen" have been is nice, and the voice acting is great, I párticularly like how the main character delibers his sarcasm with the utmost apathy That said, the game suffers on other departments, specially in the combat, melee combat is too dangerous for the bard, even if you time well your blocks. The ranged combat is dreadful, the bow is slow and sometimes the character get "stuck" pulling the string without firing. the minios sometimes stand there doing nothing even if you order them to attack and the damage they do is minimal, the dog is a great companion, but he tends to get KOed with a single hit, it is obvious that the combat is centered in having your companions distract the enemy while you take shots at them, but the aforementioned problems with the bow turn the whole thing into an exercise in frustration the controls are also a mixed bag, it's good that you can press a button to access a ring of commands to quickly change weapons and summons, is even better when the game pauses so you don't have to worry about being ganked while doing so, but I believe this mechanic would have been even better if you could select things with your mouse too, and talking about the mouse, why are the camera controls not tied to a mouse button? Oh and before I forget, if I try to skip the intro movies the game crashes leaving me with a locked screen where I cannot access any other program except the start menu and the only solution is to reboot the PC, the game also crashes upon quitting, fortunately without the annoying screen issue The voice acting and the writing make the want to love it, but it has too many issues for my liking

A masterpiece

I have never played a game so hilarious. It is filled up to the brim with memorable genious and witty moments. There hasn't been a game since The Bards Tale that has made me cry laughing. That is only one aspect of the game of course. But the story and the gameplay is really well made. Love the mechanics and there is no bullshit. The narrator, the bard and the old man are such memorable characters. Have played through it 4 times.

Tales of the unknown disaster.

I so hate to give one of my favorite games of all time a bad review. But I bought the game to play bards tale, tales of the unknown. But the only thing that was unknown was what inxile was thinking when they made this port. They chose the worst possible version of the original bards tale to port over, it doesnt run in dosbox, it runs in some weird emulator that doesnt work well. The graphics manage to look even worse than the dos version. It randomly locks up. The character creation tool is clunkier than the dos or commodore 64 version. Oh and what happened to the construction set? Ohh you also cant run it in windowed mode, which is essential when dealing with games that ran originally in 640x480 Really what were they thinking, now none of this applies to the bards tale remake game which I never played and really have no interest in playing . This is about the original. This is coming from someone who has played many classic dos games, including pool of radiance and Ultima 4, so its not like Ive never played a classic game before. Gog really needs to release a version seperate from this horrible disaster. Especially since this is the only legal way to get the original bards tale. To quote Angry Joe, you done messed it up!

Enoyable, but buggy

Bit of a warning for anyone purchasing this (possibly linux port specific). Save at every opportunity. After a while of play, I'd get a graphics bug that would turn an area of the map yellow. Sometimes visible early by yellow streaks between the textures. The frame rate in the yellow area would drop precipitously. The only fix was to restore from a save This was particularly annoying in the final tower where save points were few and far between and I had to fight the Finfolk in level 10 blind using the minimap only and in slow motion. Thankfully using the elevator was considered a new map load. Otherwise, enjoyable if a bit predictable and grind-y in places.
