You play as the titular Bard, a roguish, manipulative and lewd songster whose priorities in life are the acquisition of material wealth and carnal pleasures. The Bard's pretty sarcastic by nature, but you get to decide just how scathing he is by selecting 'Nice' or 'Sarky' responses. Watch out you don't get too cocky though; folk you've upset may come back to haunt you.
During his raucous adventures, the Bard recruits a motley band of eccentrics and misfits to help in his ignoble cause. Enemies can be defeated using traditional or magical weapons and you can also use the Bard's dulcet tones to summon creatures. If you're tired of saving humankind or bored of games that take themselves a bit too seriously, The Bard's Tale could very well be for you.

There's really only three relevant questions about this game. (1) Is it a Bard's Tale game? No, not in any meaningful sense. It's a click-to-kill action RPG in the vein of Diablo, with more story progression and less loot grind. (2) Is it funny? Yes, mostly - it frequently made me chuckle, and you probably will too, although even the fairly generous amount of narration isn't quite enough to sustain the game's run time. (3) Is it fun? Yes, mostly. I doubt it's anyone's favourite game, but It got my money's worth and enjoyed my time with it, and if a humorous click-to-kill RPG sounds at all interesting to you, then you probably will too.
The Bard's Tale is a great comedy but a bad RPG. This game is like RPG lite. Usual staples of rpgs like inventory, companions, and quests are all simplified. Their is not inventory system as you have only one item for each section. When ever you pick up a stronger item the weaker one is automatically sold. Not that much side quest and the ones they have are simple and straightforward. The companions are all summons so they can't permanently die. The saving grace of this game is the characters and writing. The story is the only good thing in the game. You will find yourself wanting to see the bard succeed because he is such a likeable character. For the price I recommend this game for people that want a funny game.
Credit where it's due, this game has some good humour but even then it kind of gets old from trying to give too much of a good thing and the fading away of the quality of dialogue. This game had to be funny and had to keep it up, but failed profoundly. The gameplay is lackluster, very repetitive and it just isn't interesting outside of summons.
I played this game when it first came out on the PS2, and I have no real experience with the series outside of that.
This game has some of the best sense of humor I've seen for a video game. Which is mostly what it brings to the table today. I'm not saying the game is bad by any means, but please just keep in mind it came out on the PS2 and some of the mechanics and gameplay elements are a little dated. Hah, you thought I was going to talk about graphics, didn't you?
Also, the controller mapping is a little bit of a nightmare, though it's fairly easy to get used to it once you play the game for a bit. I would recommend if you haven't played it before, play it for the humor and jokes, or the amazing voice acting talent on display. But the gameplay itself is a little dated and isn't going to impress.
I remember playing this ages ago, and it still doesn't disappoint. The humor can be a bit crude at times, but it simply wouldn't work if it wasn't there, and you will find some funny gags within, including multiple songs, silly character quirks, and chicanery galore. Not to mention the 4th wall breaks when the Bard interacts with the Narrator. The only place this game really falls short is that it's linear, which leads to rather limited replayability.
