I feel bad that Volition is no more before they could have a chance to make and updated version of Summoner. This is one of their classic and most fantastic first games before they made the Saint's Row series.
It is a must play.
I really loved this game. I was ill at the time it came out so I spent about 4 days non-stop playing it (which ended up killing my PS2 CD drive :).
I was a very gripping game which I enjoyed immensely, even though it was a bit repetitive in combat. The number of different equipable items (as far as I can recall, 14 years later) was large though and the characters progressed interestingly.
Maybe you remember a short video that was doing the rounds around the time of this game with a couple of geeky character playing a roleplaying game, and where the wizards uses magic missile to "attack the darkness"? Yup, those are characters from this game, and I believe the video came with the game somewhere too. (Just search "attack the darkness youtube")
Certainly worth the small amount of money GOG asks for it.
This game is bad. BUT its also really quite fun! Its basically like a live action baulders gate type game. On the ps2 was horrible I remember constant crashes and glitches. Many glitches are still there and its buggy but these bugs are all to game design not the code itself. The GOG version is far more stable than the original and I image the steam one since steam does nothing for games. Its slow, its clunky but its also very enjoyable and addicting. For such a low price it wont disappoint. Its old school so markers wont tell you what to do or where to go so you'll need to be an old school game detective. Which I enjoy actually. There arent many locations but the ones there are are HUGE. The character development is fun and has good power progression. Equipment and skills make a major difference on your play. The story aint half bad either. Lots of dialoge to explain things. Side quests are a mixed bag but are all pretty challenging. Its also a hard game if you arent careful, another positive in my opinion. All in all its a good bad game and I enjoyed it just as much now as I did 20 years ago!
I love the lore of this game. Has real air of mystery to it enhanced with the games wonderful soundtrack. The characters are fun also. The only bad thing is the combat its not interesting and when you pick up spells it becomes broken (casting firewall through solid walls for max cheese) That said the game kept me playing to the end and its the only game where i spoke to every NPC i ever met lol.
I feel this is a truly underrated gem. I have played it through about 3 or 4 times over many years, always to the end, and I keep playing it again. I think its the story that attracts me, and the sheer amount of content. There are lots of areas. The combat gets repetitive, except for boss fights, which are always interesting. I give it 5 stars simply because even after all these years I can start playing it, and I still want to play it to the end. For such an old game to draw my interest deserves it a place on my shelf. Forever.
