First time I played this game was on PS2, never finished it all those years ago, so hoping to finish on PC playthrough. Definitely a better experience on PC! Can't go wrong with this classic RPG
One of my favourite PS2 titles of which I have fond memories. Playing it on PC is reviving those memories, and reminding me what a great game it is. Okay, so the graphics may seem crude by today's standards, but the gameplay is great and the characterisation good. A fantastic trip down memory lane to a time before quest pointers.
My rating: 10/10.
It plays well and I haven't hit any major issues so far and honestly, that is all I really wanted when I picked this up. The PS2 version is a nightmare so this was nice to play.
Summoner is a product of its time in that its controls are lacking and the character models are ugly. Figuring out where to go and what to do can be tedious as the in game map lacks markers and the journal provides vague information. The game would occasionally crash to desktop with no warning, causing me to lose progress if I hadn't saved recently. And yet, I found myself enjoying Summoner despite its shortcomings.
A lot of those complaints, again, are due to Summoner having been released some twenty years ago. If you approach the game for what it is you'll find a game that has a simple but fun combat system that is at times challenging, and a story that is often well-written and humorous. The towns and dungeons in the game are large and sprawling. Summoner was actually a lot of fun to explore and to play through.
Unfortunately, Summoner does have a number of unresolved bugs that can make the game difficult and/or impossible to play. During my playthrough, while going through the Liangshan Forest, I made it to a boss encounter which triggered a cutscene, and the cutscene would hard crash the game each time I tried to initiate it. I tried toggling game settings, graphics settings, and I searched online for a solution to this problem, and regrettably nothing worked.
In the past I have had good experiences with GOG when I've bought older titles in that GOG does a good job at making older titles work on modern PCs, but Summoner seems to be hard locked at this encounter. It is a shame too, because for the most part I enjoyed playing Summoner despite its flaws, and I wanted to play the game through to completion.
