STAR WARS™ Episode I: Racer

This was one of the first PC games I ever played and I was heartbroken some years ago as I tried running it on my new PC and it wouldn't work (Win7/Win10 wouldn't do it) so I was wishing for either a new HD remake or a new game or that sometime someone would get it done so it runs on modern machines, and here we are now, one of hte greatest anitgrav racers of all time ony my Win10 PC without any problems, I am so happy right now. I can only tell every lover of Wipeout, F-Zero and the like, get it! it's fun has so much content and the added factor of Star Wars as a theme jsut blows it away.

I bough this game out of all excitement. I really thought the compatibility on Windows 10 would have been fixed 100%. The game did start even on 4k resolution with the videos really small, and the other gameplay screens on full screen display size, and the game lagged so I decided to put in on the peak resolution used in its time 1024 x 768 and the introduction videos along with the game menu animations were smooth. Now here's where everything started being a bummer: Upon button configuration with the Xbox 360 controller for windows, every time I tried setting the X / Y axis it failed to either save it or the trigger buttons did not stay as I set them. Where as every time I saved it the game would complain with conflict and just close the game abruptly. The other thing, sometimes the audio would come up, and then out of nowhere, the audio stopped. In the end it was just 2 dollars wasted. Thank gawd, I bought it on the discount time. I only wish Lucas Arts / EA would make a remasterization for this game. The fun ration, and Star Wars experience is very well done for this game .. I know because I did complete it. Please note. The one star is because I really thought this game would have worked flawlessly but I had too many issues that then I just got tired of trying to play this game.

While the graphics definitely show its age, this game still brings an incredible sense of speed. While it might be a Star Wars game with an extremely limited scope, what it does, it does well. There aren't many tracks, but every track has lots of alternative routes you can take, so you can outperform your competitors not just on straightline speed, but also on knowledge of the course. The boost function has been implemented really well, where the compromise in manoeuvrability, the overheating issue and the cooldown make it something you constantly have to think about; it's always there, but there are risks and limits, so you'd better use it wisely. Of course you can race as Anakin Skywalker, but there are so many other racers for you to choose from, you'd be foolish to stick with him all the way through. Sadly, the game is fairly short (only 4 championships to make your way through), but it's definitely a game to revisit from time to time.
