STAR WARS™ Episode I: Racer

Star Wars Episode 1 Racer is a game I got when I was young (Around 9). I played the game for hours but never got past the second set of races. I still have the disc and a few years ago I tried to get the game to run. I couldn't get the game to work. I eventually gave up and hoped for a GOG release. I checked GOG and hoped for the game to appear on GOG. And today it finally happened. The game runs great. It started in wide screen by default. There were no visual glitches. The controls (I am using a keyboard, just like when I first played it) works without the need to change anything. The game has a sense of speed that few games have. It really feels like you are darting around the tracks at 700 km per hour. The tracks are designed well with lots of open spaces and twisty areas. One minor thing that may be of putting is the control scheme. The pod racer needs 8 buttons to control. Then there are a few other buttons that needs to be used. The controls aren't terribly complicated once you get used to it but there is a learning curve. BOTTOM LINE: A great port of a great game. A steal for 10$.

It's working! It's working! Amazing game, been waiting for this too long. Works without any problems on modern hardware, 1080p and beyond supported. Whether you're a star wars fan or not this is definitely worth a try, will run on any potato of coruse.

I really loved this game when it came out like twenty years ago. Such a fun sense of speed - a real thrill ride. But it just doesn't seem to hold up, at least with this release. I wish they'd found a way to allow native HD resolution for instance. If you've never played it you might have some fun with it, but I regret trying to go back on this one. The music is still great though.

It's not that I forgot how fun this simple racing game is, it's just that it had been so long since I have played it. Game worked right out of the box - just had to populate the joystick control parameters by hitting 'default' on the joystick config screen after enabling it. Not sure what all these bantha poodoos are whining about really, but then, I'm not one who needs modern resolutions or sophisticated refresh rates or TRILINEAR filters to play a CLASSIC game. 4:3 FOREVER!

This game was a nice surprise when it came out. It was fast, it looked nice, and the racers handled quite well. It's a bit on the easy side, though, so if you're looking for a challenge, this is not the thing for you. If you enjoy fast racing and/or pod racing specifically, you can't really go wrong.
