STAR WARS™ Episode I: Racer

This is one of my favorite racing games. I played many hours of it at release, on both PC and Dreamcast. It's fairly easy from the perspective that "lines" really don't matter that much. In sim style racing games such as Gran Turismo or Grid, winning requires driving a certain line down the track, where the movement from inside to outside of the track makes a big difference. In this game, the line doesn't matter a whole lot, because as the tracks ramp up in difficulty, the path you can drive get thinner so therefore obvious. The challenge in this game comes from the sense of speed. As it gets into later tracks and pod upgrades, it starts to feel really fast. So it requires a lot of focus to keep up with the perception of speed, and learning the tracks to avoid obstacles and to know when to boost. The graphics hold up really well. Things are moving so fast that screenshots don't really do it justice, and more polygons wouldn't change the game that much. Overall, a very fun game. Highly recommended. I've had no technical issues, BTW. Worked fine. I'm on Windows 7 with an early gen i7 and old NVidia graphics. It seems like newer machines are having more issues than older machines, which is likely because of how old the game is. Hopefully GOG will get all the issues running on newer machines worked out.

Great release of a classic game. Not gonna spend a lot of words on the game itself except saying that if you haven't played it you should absolutely pick it up. Graphics are of course slightly dated, but it is a racing game with a great sense of speed (similar to Wipeout and F-Zero) and an interesting boost/overheat/repair mechanic. For those linux enthusiasts - similar to the original CD version (mine is unfortunately lost) this also works great in WINE :)

The game itself is still fun to play. But unfortunately it doesn't support the XBox360-controller properly. You can map all the functions to the buttons, but some just don't work in game. For example I put Accelerate to the A-Button, which worked. But then I tried to map the booster to X-Button and I just did not work. I also couldn't switch the camera angels in the race, even though I mapped the corresponding function. So the game is practically unplayable for me - concerning the keyboard is no real option. That's a real dissappointment for me. I would have expected that upon re-releasing the game, it would support one of the most widespread pc-controllers.

Game runs good, looks great and is totally Star Wars. Well, okay, so it's Phantom Menance, worst Star Wars film out there but at least it forcuses on the best part of the worst movie... right? This is worth picking up if it's on sale. Few issues, the UI for upgrading your pod is pretty annoying and cumbersome, couldn't get a controller to work, but my main and only real issue is how darn easy the game is. I have completed one race on every track. Not ONCE did I feel like I was actually racing anyone. And I was ramming walls, blowing up multiple times etc. A few maps I was even lapping AI opponents. Just way, way too easy. No challenge whatsoever

I still have my CD of this game! I've tried every way possible to emulate an environment to play it, now it's available I'll have to pick it up again one day... this is one of the few Star Wars games I have long wished to get on steam! now I have to find the cd, it was here last time i tried to get it to work in VM... might be in this old pc I was building to try playing it... anyway... You can't go wrong with this game! it was amazing on hardware back in 2000, and with today's hardware! I can't believe Lucasarts/Disney re-released it for windows 10! The sights and sounds, and environment of the movie, and your in the pod racer! a very immersive game, i can't wait to experience again!
