Description
Based on a strategy board game, Star Fleet Battles, Star Trek™: Starfleet Command Gold Edition puts you in the captain's chair of a frigate. Each successful mission gains you prestige and furthers your career. Experience a 30 year campaign that can take you as far as becoming a Rear Admiral in control of a task force including Destroyers, Heavy Cruisers, and Dreadnoughts.
Discover uncharted Nebulae, maneuver through dense asteroid fields and belts or battle at the fringe of a black hole. The different types of terrain require commanders to exercise additional caution and skill. Maneuver to keep your target within the arc of your weapons, but remember that these are massive ships and you will have to plan ahead. Between campaign missions refit and repair your ships at Starbase. Recruit new officers or send your trainees back into the officer pool to earn additional prestige.
Command over 50 unique campaign missions generated by the Dynaverse engine, or reenact classic scenarios from the original series.
Pledge allegiance in the Klingon Empire, the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire, the Hydran Kingdom, the Gorn Confederation or the Lyran Star Empire.
Gold Edition features an additional 3 new Federation missions, 3 new Klingon missions, 10 new Hydran missions 7 new Gorn missions, 3 new Romulan missions, and more!
It does NOT play like the orignal CD installed version of the game. No special missions, no soecial group invites, nothing. And there is ZERO campaign story line. It's just one nonsense battle after another, with nothing in between. Very disappointing. Thankfully I finally found my CDs and installed the playable game.
Without Windows 10 64-bit support, this game truly sucks for me. WIndows 7 is no longer an option. There should be a huge warning about Windows 10 compatibility in the program description.
I bought it without even thinking, BUT it does not yet works on windows 8.1; it crashes, i do not kown why ! but i do remember problems with this game at beginnings ; So i purchased it because my CD does not work any more. I am waiting patiently for a patch of windows 8.1 or explanation how to make it work. IT IS BADLY NEEDED since a lot of gamers now has windows 8.1 !!! come on GOG games, a lot of people are waiting for a clean game for win 8.1.
I did try and get this running on Windows 10 but no dice. Installed it on a Windows 7 machine that I usually use to run a Minecraft server and it works well.
Man, this game brings back memories. Although you can play the campaign I recommend playing a few skirmishes, maybe even the tutorial if you're really new to SFC. I wholeheartedly recommend trying your luck with the Wrath of Khan scenario, it's brutal, but then what now-in scenario isn't? :)
If this could be made to run on W10 I'd give it the full five stars.
Based on the boardgame Starfleet Battles, this meshes in a real-time aspect to combat. However, that combat is more similar to sailing ships than aerial fdogfighting. So, for example, after firing your various weapons, you may be left maneuvering for some time until those systems are ready to fire again.
There is a speed adjuster, so you can speed up or slow down combat as you like. At its higher settings, it's very near an arcade. Where at the slower settings, it gives to time to consider things as if you were playing a boardgame.
The three rating is due to the fact, as others have noted, is it gets extremely repetitive. And in the campaign game, the enemy ships upgrade as you do. So there can be weird situations where you're at a disadvantage because of that as some ships are better at some missions. You also really don't have a huge effect (if any) on the campaign map, so events can seem very arbitrary. If you just want to fight in skirmish mode you can set up some truly grand battles.
SFC: Orion Pirates is a standalone expansion that is better in every way save one - that being SFC Gold has officers that increase in experience. SFC:OP does not. I'm not sure why they removed that feature.
But if you're OK with sailing ship style combat in space, you'll have fun killing time. (Each combat typically lasts around 10-30 minutes.)
As an aside, in the "SFB" subdirectory of the game, you get the "cadet" version of Starfleet Battles in PDF. The counters are crummy looking (lots of artifacts - like a 90s era jpeg saved at extreme low quality), but usable.
