Star Trek™: Starfleet Command Gold Edition

I used to love playing this game... and when I saw all of the issues people are having, I thought I'd take a crack at it. Here's what I did to play crash-free... * Installed the game under Program Files (x86) * Download the full DX redistribution pack from MS. directx_jun2010_redist.exe -- the whole thing has a bunch of cabs in it spanning about 5 years. Extract it and run the dxsetup.exe * I took the earliest dx9 dll (the 64 bit one from the 2005 cab, if you're running 32 bit windows, use the x86 cab instead) and renamed it to d3dx9.dll and put it in the main folder for SFC * Ran the SFC config, chose the highest res available (do not use the 'software' options) * Launched the game and played full screen with no crashing-- yaay If you don't know how to extract files from a .cab, google it. It's easy.

Not sure what the Gold Edition includes, but this was one of my favorite games from the late 90's. Works pretty flawlessly on my Surface 3 with Windows 10 (yes that means Intel HD graphics), especially considering the game was pretty buggy even back when running under Windows 98 or ME or XP. However, it was pretty much unplayable on my Vista era laptop that currently runs Windows 8.1, but I still have to use video card drives from Vista in compatibility mode (because Nvidia stopped supporting my mobile card), so that is likely the issue. On a side note, I love that GOG is keeping games like these running on modern systems. Not just Windows operating systems, but also supporting many games for Mac and Linux too. All of this while making all games DRM free! All I can say is, eat your heart out, Steam!

Just a quick observation after many tribulations trying to get the game to work under Windows 10. It turned out that the issue was with the display driver. Go to the config.exe file in your game folder and run it. Under the Display option, select SOFTWARE. This will limit you to a maximum resolution of 800x600, which frankly I found to be quite adequate. With modern computers, this did not seem to cause any performance issues that I could notice. That's it. There is no need to muck around with compatibility settings at all as this should work as is. Really great game by the way.

Loved the game back when. If your on a windows 8 machine don't purchase this till it's fixed. First Time I've gotten a game here (I've got about 30) that doesn't work.

This is a great game with all the feel of the Board game but without the hassel of pen and paper. Only issue I had was the graphics. After 5 mins of trial and Error sorted
