As some reviewers have already said, the game is struggling with performance problems in its current state.
It makes no difference whether the graphics settings are set to high or low. In addition, there is the long waiting time at every game start until the shaders have been compiled.
The game is definitely not unplayable, but it is not as much fun with the performance problems.
I can't say too much about the story because I've only played about 45 minutes so far. I'll probably pause the game for now and wait for a few patches.
So far I have enjoy what I have played, it reminds me a lot of 2007 stalker and that means also roughness. The only problems which have had an impact of my enjoyment has been searching why my FPS was dropping to single digits and that was NPC faces which I drop to low-medium in settings, which push it up to 28-30FPS. There also was a problem with toggle-hold choice of sprint etc which was fixed by loading an older save. Plus the AI problems said by other people.
I run everything on high with some on epic fog, grass etc, and I have an old CPU I-6700k with 32GB and RTX3700, I get 30FPS in camps with 50-60FPS on a 2k monitor outside, temp is 63 on the system in total.
If you’re a fan of stalker and were around back in 2007 you will enjoy this game even with the problems which the devs are already said they are fixing. If you’re more sensitive to bugs or have worse specs then me or need optimisation out of the box. I would say hold off for a few weeks/months put it on your wish list; keep an eye on it, because it has all the fundamentals for a great game. Plus the mod community are one of the best for future play through, I Hope this helps someone out there.
It was a decent game. As usual, the use of Unreal Engine (the lazy path for devs) comes with a host of issues especially on PC. A lot of the performance issues stem from UE5 just being garbage, good looking engine but a polished turd is still a turd. Would be nice to go back to the days where devs were actual devs and made their own engines. I played with a 7900x, 4090, 32gb 6000 Ram, best SSD money can buy, and had plenty of performance issues at 1080p!
For the game itself. I agree with the notion this isn't STALKER it's STALKER- Call of Duty. Much of the spirit that made the original games what they were isn't here. The gameplay is hit and miss. Just gets dumb at times with enemies hitting you three miles away with a shotgun while you're behind cover. Being in cover is more or less pointless because enemies shoot through walls half the time.
Game play gets very repetitive. Looking for stashes is the filler in the game and at about mid game just becomes a waste of time. By Pripyat was feeling like a drag so rushed to end of the game pretty much.
I can't say why but progression with weapons, armor, and artifacts did not feel nearly as fulfilling as the og games. Guess it's from the whole stream lining of the game itself and when it feels cookie cutter whenever you get a cookie it's whatever.
Story was good. Loyal to the lore and new things made sense in the scope of the STALKER universe.
That said, I'd say it's 7 out of 10. It has its share of problems but it was good enough to give me entertainment for 73 hours. I bought the ultimate so hopefully the two promised DLCs are worth it, I feel I got my money worth so far for the base game. For most though (I'm a big STALKER fan played the original games a lot) I would not recommend this at full price. Wait half a year or so for both issues to be fixed and to get it at a steep discount.
Generally I am satisfied with the game itself, I praise great graphics detail, in general attention to detail and that GSC did not give up releasing the game. After 80+ hours played I loved to play the game, I got immersed and spent two nights non stop playing the game. However I still feel the game was too rushed and lacked closed alpha / beta testing which would likely reveal severe technical issues.
I really loved previous STALKER iterations and I was kind of used to some level of those games being kind of buggy, however STALKER 2 brought this to next level:
1) Insane level of bugs and issues. Even with 1.1.2 patch the game still feels like public alpha version. On PC where I have in depth tested stability by tens of hours stability tests (OCCT, Y-Cruncher and various synthetic and practical graphics tests) I experienced 2 blue screens linked to severe memory leaks (game was corrupting pagefile), random crashes and other non fatal memory leaks (game hogged whopping 40+ GB RAM)
2) Bugged campaign, as many ones I had issue with Zalissia rescue mission, but also some missions felt like logical puzzle game. I spent a lot of time figuring out where to go, what I am supposed to do. For instance Ahroprom mission, I could not figure out without YouTube where I should get an access card. I am OK with this on stashes, optional missions, but main missions should be quite easy to navigate through
3) Poor performance. I have 7900 XTX / 9800X3D / 64 GB 6000 MT/s CL30 RAM, but still getting barely 60+ FPS on native QHD is insane. Running this converts my PC into burner anomaly :) Unreal Engine 5 kills hard the performance including repetetive shader compilation.
4) At release no A-Life and even after patch 1.1 it is still not what it used to be on previous STALKERs. Zone still feels quite abandoned. Since 1.1 patch it is more livefull, but NPCs unload from rendering too soon compared to previous STALKERs
