I played the Xbox Game Pass version.
While the game offers a fun experience overall, it’s hard to ignore some of the issues. The AI can feel inconsistent, and there are several minor gameplay glitches or mechanics that can break immersion.
Though I can tolerate the subpar performance, the game’s constant crashing is a major problem. Each time you reload, you’re forced to recompile shaders, which can take several minutes depending on your system.
It’s clear the game needed more time for optimization and bug fixes, especially to address the game-breaking crashes.
My recommendation: wait for a sale and a few patches before diving in.
I am gonna cut my review short, i got the Ward Ending (Stalker Difficulty) and did most of the quests, so i think i am able to rate the game in a fair manner.
The gunplay is extremely good and the story is awesome (best STALKER game for sure), but thats where the good things end.
The level design is horrific with thousands of unnecessary barriers that make you run around in circles for hours, the quest markers are useless, the loot is ridiculously bad and you are running out of ammo all of the time (so you are forced to use guns that you dont like), not to mention game breaking quest-bugs and unbalanced enemies (some are target dummies and others are unkillable supersoldiers for no reason), in its current state the game is a boring running simulator with very bad lighting (way too dark and way too many nights) for hardcore STALKER fanboys who just want to play the story no matter the cost.
Unless you want to install 20 different mods and enable cheats via the UE Console you will have a very bad time with this game, so better wait for the big patches (i played on 1.0.3) and buy it on sale with a big discount.
Disappointed with both graphics and gameplay..
I'll start with the profile issue - no ideas what it tries to create but every start it waiting for connection and then shows error message. Then well known issue with shaders - I have 10G storage enabled, but game doesn't care (seems a common issue for UE5).
Graphics looks over-sharpened and over-detailed and looks great but.. (see later) and same time shadows are terrible. Very hard to spot enemies, especially when you have no binoculars (why they were removed at all?) The stealth gameplay wasn't really in mind of developers. Enemies can see you practically everywhere, even when you're hiding, but you almost never can't spot them except on open field. Yes, anomalies are beautiful! But light balance is terrible. When you're entering the abandoned house with bright daylight outside, you have to turn on the torch to see anything.
Controls - not a fan of new control type - Q/E for meds/energetics, Z/C for look around? Maybe I haven't found the key but detector can be grabbed only from the TAB menu. Some actions can be performed with one key (F for open/iteract) some with other (E - trade) etc. Seems overcomplicated.
Game balance - seriously? 10 minutes of gameplay and already a bloodsucker? You're almost empty and have to fight serious monster - not a good start IMHO. Also the one in the cave on the artefact quest - had to load from saves more than 100 times trying to shot the monster until decided to run through to escape. Also huge question about AI.
Voiceover - very sensitive question but it would be very nice to have a surzhyk (Ukrainian/russian mix) available - I understand Ukrainian a little but still it is very hard to understand what NPCs are saying, and reading subtitles is a real bummer, and switching to English sounds very unnatyral and immediately breaks all immersion.
I hope devs will fix all issues soon, as Stalker is my favourite franchises, but for now the best one is Call of Pripyat.
Слава Україні!
uninstalled for now, played for over 25 hours. I´m not even mad, its stalker and I bought It because I want to support the devs and the ukraine. Played through the story. When I come back in maybe 6-12 Months, I just want to roam, build faction trust, kill mutants and just want to immerse myself like in the first one with unlimited mods.
I did not watched any reviews or metacritics or on steam but on my whole playthrough I though, damn this feels like Fallout 4 again, than I watched some Fallout 4 clips and I thought to myself damn those are some outdated graphics but somehow I always had the Fallout 4 vibes and at TIMES, I thought I liked Metro Exodus more than this.
PS: I got more frustrated with some quest and missing markers, hints etc. than with Dark Souls Games. If you want to have fun, just don´t play the story - for now!
I got the same feeling I got with Cyberpunk at a certain time I just thought to myself: Please let this end, I want to see the end and uninstall this. There are so many bugs, I had to restart my game every 20 minutes because the endless stutter anomalie began to shine.
See ya in like 6-12 Months.
It was a decent game. As usual, the use of Unreal Engine (the lazy path for devs) comes with a host of issues especially on PC. A lot of the performance issues stem from UE5 just being garbage, good looking engine but a polished turd is still a turd. Would be nice to go back to the days where devs were actual devs and made their own engines. I played with a 7900x, 4090, 32gb 6000 Ram, best SSD money can buy, and had plenty of performance issues at 1080p!
For the game itself. I agree with the notion this isn't STALKER it's STALKER- Call of Duty. Much of the spirit that made the original games what they were isn't here. The gameplay is hit and miss. Just gets dumb at times with enemies hitting you three miles away with a shotgun while you're behind cover. Being in cover is more or less pointless because enemies shoot through walls half the time.
Game play gets very repetitive. Looking for stashes is the filler in the game and at about mid game just becomes a waste of time. By Pripyat was feeling like a drag so rushed to end of the game pretty much.
I can't say why but progression with weapons, armor, and artifacts did not feel nearly as fulfilling as the og games. Guess it's from the whole stream lining of the game itself and when it feels cookie cutter whenever you get a cookie it's whatever.
Story was good. Loyal to the lore and new things made sense in the scope of the STALKER universe.
That said, I'd say it's 7 out of 10. It has its share of problems but it was good enough to give me entertainment for 73 hours. I bought the ultimate so hopefully the two promised DLCs are worth it, I feel I got my money worth so far for the base game. For most though (I'm a big STALKER fan played the original games a lot) I would not recommend this at full price. Wait half a year or so for both issues to be fixed and to get it at a steep discount.
