A campaign within the world of Vol, a fully realized setting inspired by the late bronze age in a Transylvanian landscape, with unique politics, races and gods steeped in history. Featuring a chosen party of five, you role-play Necholai, a minor god of a celestial body who descends to the Staglands for a moonlit festival only to find the way home blocked and immortality slipping away. Seeking answers and aid, you take on a mortal body and the guise of a traveling Spicer. This isn't a story of good and evil, saving the world or being a hero, it's about intrigue and your adventure of survival in a harsh land.
While the game rolls the dice for you, you'll traverse the Staglands on a path narrated by your own wits and choices. A tabletop inspired experience with adventure-game like navigation, Serpent in the Staglands offers no auto-populating map markers, checklist quest grinding and rigid story exposition.
Examine hand-drawn maps in your inventory for secret locations, diagrams of foreign languages, note encounters of interest in your in-game journal and figure out on your own how best to smuggle Spices. Roleplay, investigate, and pray to the RNG god when combat begins.
Party-based, real time with pause combat focused on macro tactical decisions and creative party skill combinations
Classless role-playing system: create builds via any combination of magic, combat and aptitude skills available to create or find up to 5 unique characters
Non-linear storyline to uncover and explore through dialogue, clue and puzzles

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
Only purchase if you are the hardest of the hardcore role player, because as of now the beginning level of difficulty is just far too frustrating to get into.
There's certainly something interesting in this game that makes you load time and time again after your entire party has been killed by a fox.
But why were you killed by a fox in the first place? The game just feels like a grind, load, get killed, load, get killed, load, don't get killed because the enemy is not there. I don't have anything against the unclear fighting system but this game is fueled by random number gods. And although in open world it's quite normal to encountered enemies that you're just not ready for yet here is a problem of finding an enemy that you actually may kill.
I anjoy trying out indie games in the hopes of finding hidden gems. This game has promise, but also flaws. IMHO, the game is a bit too slow, at least for me who has played a lot of games over some decades and over time grown accustomed to faster pace. If I had played this 20 years ago, I think I would have liked it a lot but it's hard to go back and play games the way you did pre-internet era.
What's good:
Cool idea with being a god in a mortal avatar. The world is bleak and grim, which I like. Some spell effects look cool, from the few I saw.
What's not that great:
Movement speed is kinda slow. I am one of those who have "always run" always on. Clicks fail to register, ie clicking a spell icon than clicking a character to heal them often fails. Tool tips are too few and give too little information. Couldn't even find a way how to get a tooltip on the spells so had to test them and see what they did. And I don't absolutely hate that per se, but I think it's a weird choice for a new game. It's been some decades since you read manuals before playing. No proper map, instead a sort of just slightly zoomed out one you can scroll a bit. would have preferred a "normal" map. Brutal early combat. You get slaughtered everywhere and die over and over. If you try to run, all enemies run faster than you for some unknown reason, even humanoids like yourself. For a game with brutal combat, making it possible to run away to exit combat should have been implemented instead of having to die and reload.
Overall I think the devs have some good ideas and they probably have made a game in the vein of what they themselves like. I respect that, it was just not my cup of tea. Cheers.
The setting is nice. I love the music. It may not have as many QOL things as AAA crpgs but I think it's a great effort by a 2 person team. I feel I got my money's worth!
This cRPG takes some getting used to, but was clearly made with a lot of heart. I really like the spell system, which is all about sustained effects (requiring constant maintenance of the caster), and I also really like the world building and core story setup. The graphical style is also simultaneously highly retro but also highly unique.
It is however, a tough game to get to grips with, and in this case I highly recommend reading the included manual, as well as searching around online for some simple tips.
