Description
A campaign within the world of Vol, a fully realized setting inspired by the late bronze age in a Transylvanian landscape, with unique politics, races and gods steeped in history. Featuring a chosen party of five, you role-play Necholai, a minor god of a celestial body who descends to the Staglands for a moonlit festival only to find the way home blocked and immortality slipping away. Seeking answers and aid, you take on a mortal body and the guise of a traveling Spicer. This isn't a story of good and evil, saving the world or being a hero, it's about intrigue and your adventure of survival in a harsh land.

While the game rolls the dice for you, you'll traverse the Staglands on a path narrated by your own wits and choices. A tabletop inspired experience with adventure-game like navigation, Serpent in the Staglands offers no auto-populating map markers, checklist quest grinding and rigid story exposition.

Examine hand-drawn maps in your inventory for secret locations, diagrams of foreign languages, note encounters of interest in your in-game journal and figure out on your own how best to smuggle Spices. Roleplay, investigate, and pray to the RNG god when combat begins.
  • Party-based, real time with pause combat focused on macro tactical decisions and creative party skill combinations
  • Classless role-playing system: create builds via any combination of magic, combat and aptitude skills available to create or find up to 5 unique characters
  • Non-linear storyline to uncover and explore through dialogue, clue and puzzles

So far so good.

This game reminds me of old rpg's from the 80's and 90's like mentioned. I don't think Darklands is an adequate comparison like some do. I think it is more like Ultima type games. At least it reminds me of playing Ultima Online, where all you had was a journal to write your quests down in. Also I noticed the spell interface is like Age of Wonders. I thoroughly enjoy the theme of being alone in a harsh environment. That not everyone you meet is out there to help you like other games. The graphics actually add a lot of mood to the game, in my opinion. I do hope they continue to make games like these and don't let this be their only work of art.

Wasted opportunity

The graphics are terrible, it's not even old school, the original Baldur's Gate is HD graphics by comparison; it's not just that they are bland, they make navigating unnecessarily uncomfortable. The UI is a mess, it's difficult to understand what buttons do, and good luck understanding the spells in an adequate manner, it's not about hand holding, it's about making the game easy and pleasant to use. The combat is, for some reason, ridiculously tough, the first enemies, which as usually foxes or some nonsense, can easily kill you, while in a party mind you. The premise is super interesting, but unfortunately the game is a chore to play; I don't get how a game made nowadays, with so many terrific RPG to learn from (such as Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Divinity, Planescape), has such abysmal design choices. In 3 hours I couldn't find another reason to continue playing, the game made little effort to provide even basic entertainment. And even if someone tells me "the game gets better later", which I doubt, games should not require me to force myself to play them to get to the actual fun.

Unrefined

If Serpent in the Staglands was released 30 years ago, I could forgive it's glaring interface and user experience shortcomings. It's a shame, because I feel like a lot of love went into making this game.

Great ideas, bad execution

A wonderful artstyle, graphics engine and soundtrack in addition to a very intriguing worldbuilding and start of a story. However, the gameplay is very unbalanced, so much so that even I care about it; and usually I don't. Enemies respawn after loading a saved game within a dungeon, the dialouges are all extremely short, the combat is tiring and grindy except if you go for exploits, and so on. It's a case in which I wish I could love this game but I can't

Meh

Don't buy into "you are not mature/skillful enough for this game" bs. It is poorly done, despite I see that the devs put a lot of heart into it and tried to do something unique, which is always good thing to experience - sadly, the execution is bad, and owuld be so even if it was released 15 years earlier. I like the fact that the game does not lead you by hand, as it's an annoyance in games nowadays. But... I can't remember worse and underwhelming intro to a story. It could be great, as the idea (though a bit cliche - you are a god that needs to walk the earth and find a way to go back) is an interesting one. Its presentation is as bland as an average political party agenda, though. If you make a game with a bit weird and interesting world, you need to put more effort to present it well enough to let the people immerse into it. Why are the foxes attacking me on the spot? Has the nature went mad? Are the all animals rabid? What's the nearest town? Who rules this land? Is it theocracy, aristocracy, hippie commune? Let me ask NPCs about stuff like that or learn it somehow if I am to immerse in this world ffs. Dialogue options are as diverse as strategies in a game of tic-tac-toe, and equally interesting. Also, written so clumsy you need to read them twice - and you are bored by them halfway through the first approach. And to put out a game with an interface that bad in 2015 is a crime in itself. If you can forgive such mistakes/weird choices, give it a try, maybe it's getting better later on. I won't put effort into it, as the creators didn't put enough effort into some aspects of the game. Maybe they overly focused on different aspects, maybe they were stretched, I don't know. It's not a turd, but dangerously close to it. Music is great!
