Saints Row 2

Saints Row 2 is an amazing old school GTA style sandbox game. There is a great deal of freedom in terms of customization and nonlinear game progression. You can unlock some extremely powerful lategame upgrades pretty easily by doing silly sidequests (instead of unlocking them with money like in Saints Row The Third). The best way to experience a game like this is to avoid game guides and explore things on your own. I've been having a total blast with it. All of this is despite of the miserable port. The oversensitive vehicle control is difficult to get used to. It can be an issue for some of the more challenging driving tasks. This is often exacerbated by the game dropping frames due to poor optimization. In addition to the vehicle control and performance problems, I've encountered issues with the game not registering repeated key presses for some QTEs and a few hard crashes here and there. If you can look past the port issues, however, Saints Row 2 provides a highly entertaining "good old game" experience that is largely absent in its sequels.

Oh, SR2 is a lot of fun! With a truckload of activities, missions and nice customization, SR2 is a game that will be fun for a long time. But beware: The PC port sucks ass. Install Gentlemen of the Row, High Quality Radio and Masamaru's Improved Vehicles(Masamaru also made an awesome HD textures mod, but it's not necessary). You can also install RadeonPro to cap the FPS and allow the game to only use 3 CPU cores. When you have all of the above installed, the PC port is decent - the performance is still bad(Got a Ryzen 5 1600 and an RX 480 and I have 25-40 FPS) and there's still a few missing chunks here and there, but if you look over it you've got one of the best open world games ever made. This is the second time I have played this game through to completion (first was in 2013 on Steam), and I really enjoyed the game. Graphically (perhaps due to it's console heritage?) the game doesn't look great, everything feels washed out. While the audio is generally great (and the licensed soundtracks haven't been removed as seems to be the norm these days) some of the voice work seems to compressed, particular noticable when Shaundi speaks. Although the game has a lot of tounge in cheek activities (such as spraying the town with human waste), the story itself is fairly dark compared to latter SR games. But was great fun to play through. As well as the main story line, there are also plenty of option activities. Each activity has 6 levels and you generally get bonuses after the third and sixth level. I haven't tried beating the game without doing any activities, but they do add some nice perks, such as better sprinting, better weapons, unlimited ammo, etc. I found the game played just fine on my system. If I can remember that far back, I think I played the Steam version as "vanilla" without too much issue. For this GoG playthrough I installed "Gentleman of the Row". Aside from the occasinal crash , it was a stable and pleasent experiance.

One of my favorite games of all times, however, it has crashed two times within 5 hours. Apparently this works better than Steams version.
