I call it an oldie but tech has evolved so much since this game. I started with Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, which is the successor, It has a similar vibe, the music is amazing, it sets the tone. It is a game ya gotta grind a bit, but, I felt like, near the beginning, it was hard, you quickly develop your tactics and learn tricks to come out on top. You feel your work paying off as you become stronger and yes it lacks the 6 degrees of freedom 3d space, but actually that can be a strength, some will prefer RBO because of this, but, especially for the current price, you really can't beat it, can't wait to see where the story ends, and to own the really really large ships! See you out there rebels!
Rebel Galaxy is a solid space game recently released on the market.
Being limited to only 2 planes seems weird at first but you can get used to it.
The voice acting is great but the voices seem to have been recorded without using top of the line microphones so if you have music off you will hear constant static whenever someone talks.
Additionally to that some songs also have some weird crackling as if they were played on a gramophone.
The other big problem is the controls. The game is HEAVILY consolized.
Manual turret control is... bad. Very bad. And on top of that the turrets tend to snap to target and that can get annoying when there is a load of strike craft zipping around and your aiming reticle jumping left and right making it impossible to target anything specific.
Same thing applies to mining. Your mining laser simply jumps between asteroids while you are trying to get a bead on that one roid with minable resources in the area.
Didn't expect to love this game the way I do. It's so much fun! It's soooooo Freelancer style it's funny. However the plot is pretty damn cool, ships are awesome, controls are simple yet very cool, easy game to learn to play, music is GREAT!! Very Firefly soundtrack. Graphics are perfect for the style game this is. Weapons are awesome! I honestly can't complain about it at all.
.....now, I might take a lot of crap for saying this....but I'm gonna say it. Are you ready?
I like Rebel Galaxy much more than Freelancer. Yeah I said it lol. You see, I didn't like Freelancer much so I didn't expect to like this game so much. I love all of Roberts games but Freelancer was my least favorite because of the controls. Somehow because of the fighting style I actually love this games controls. Mouse and keyboard for me. I'm thinking about trying out with a gamepad but I just love the easy controls with the mouse and keyboard. Guys, for the price I highly suggest you trying this. This is the first space game to be released since Starlancer(which was a long time ago) that I have truly loved. Can't wait to play it more tomorrow. Here are some vids for those who haven't heard of this:
I was intrigued by this game when I saw it, and the description. Having a good few hours of play under my belt, I can honestly say that this is the best amount of space sim fun I've had since Starfleet Command and Freelancer. That being said, this game also successfully combines those two games, and the kind of combat style, even if it's less tactical than Starfleet Command.
The galaxy/universe is highly immersive, the contacts you talk to are well animated and the voice acting is great. So far there is nothing that pulls you out of the immersion, the missions are varied, upgrades are great, and you can randomly stumble upon some great stuff. For instance, I found a cargo container containing a very good laser turret that, if bought, would set you back 39,000 credits! That thing has made my combat a lot easier since! Stuff like that keeps the game exciting.
People have likened the combat somewhat to the naval combat in the Assassin's Creed games, and I agree. It's refreshing to have to deal with broadside shots more, rather than just do the old dogfight.
Being a Starfleet Command veteran, X-axis only movements don't bother me all too much. The only time that really gets annoying is when you want to mine asteroids and have to spend some time maneuvering your ship into a proper position, or when firing on an enemy becomes difficult because of it, or the angle.
Additional camera controls/zoom options, or even presets for various distances would be great, especially during long warp flight sequences. Those are minor issues though, and if more games had so little to comment about in terms of 'would-be-nice' improvements, that would be awesome.
In short: If you like space sims, if you enjoyed the X series, Freelancer, Darkstar One, Starfleet Command and other semi-tactical spacer-trader-combat sims (you don't get an in-cockpit view here though), you will definitely, without a doubt, enjoy this game! To me it's one of the best games I purchased in recent years.
