I ended up really liking this game but it took a good 5 hours or so to get into the game. Combat is different as you fight on a plane (no vertical). The ships all feel different and have many different weapons to load out on each. The story is present fairly well but it's not overly deep. It can take awhile to get some things done so you have to be a bit patient.
I really enjoyed this indie game. It is not on the same level with Freelancer or Privateer II, but those were AAA titles. For an indie game done by only 2 people it is a very impressive achievement and very entertaining!
I used the following ships (hulls) and all where quite good: Barracuda in the first system (and also for 2/3 of the game), later the Minotaur and at the end the Blackgate.
More important than the ship is the tech. Always level up to the next available Mk (1-6) in each new system. I always startet with Defense, then component engines and then weapons. Rest of components after that.
That game is not bad, but to the greatnes "it is" or "should be" hybrid of "Freelancer" and "Sid Meier Pirates!" to be great succesor but its not. Most of the game is "cowboy style 2D shooter" with some great music. Im playing few hours and on my account is houndreds of destroyed ships, its boring doing repeatable missions and i can have only one mercenary ship when the enemys have always dozens of small fighters around, game is stupid but well designed. With a lot of adjustment should be great. auto-Docking with station crap specialy when u fighting near, galactic map , no autopilot, grind mathodology new system > tier II> anothere system > tier III its standard but should be bettere. Scaning ships its ok or even i like it, auto cannos modes and mercenary targetying great, When they create hybrid of Freelancer and SM Pirates that should be the greates space sim / shooter / story telled game on world but we need still wate for this to happen...
If this game was 3D, I'd give it 5 stars. The game play and music are both good.
The story and fun factor carry all the way to the end. By then I was decked out with the biggest ship and the best equipment of course and ready to do some damage.
Managing your shields is job number one and be a bit aggressive and you will do just fine. If one side of shields is going down, let them hit another side. Spread out the shield damage and you will win.
Runs fine out of the box on Linux Proton.
Fantastic! I'd been looking for something to scratch the space exploration and combat itch, but nothing in years seemed to do it. Elite Dangerous is a great sim, but an empty universe, SPAZ was close but no cigar... I tried them all. This game is a breath of fresh air, and remarkably it was basically done by one developer with a very small team.
Some have complained about it being on a '2 1/2 D' plane instead of 6 DOF - I couldn't disagree more. The naval style broadsides combat suits perfectly; solid, challenging and just plain fun. There are well done aliens and NPC's, many factions, tons of ships and upgrades, great voice acting , and a fun story you can follow or choose to ignore, The 'verse is huge, each system full of worlds, stations, meteorite fields, drifting hulks, it goes on and on . Controller support, be a pirate, trader or hero, procedural universes for replays... I am having trouble leaving the couch.
Everything looks beautiful, atmospheric and runs great on my 3 year old gaming PC. The developer is ridiculously responsive, and has the patience of a saint replying personally and even providing fixed games to those that had early bugs. (Seriously check the Steam forums)
The soundtrack is spot on, featuring slide guitars and dark country (i.e. Blues Saraceno) for a gritty Firefly feel. You can also add/replace your own custom music playlists for various parts of the game such as ambient, combat, in-station, etc. I've already added some favorites.
I don't usually gush about a game, but as an older gamer who misses the open universe worlds of games like the original Elite and just doesn't have the time to learn something complex like the X3 series - this is just what I was looking for. If you want to play in a world like Firefly or Dark Matter, this is it. Seriously - if it looks even remotely like your thing buy it now. Kudos to the developer and here's hoping he will make expansions to keep the adventures going for ages to come.
