Description
Rebel Galaxy is a swashbuckling space adventure, with action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and “negotiation” with the outlandish denizens at the edge of the known universe.

As the commander of an immensely powerful star destroyer, you’ll battle pirates, explore anomalies, befriend aliens, scavenge battle wreckage, mine asteroids, and discover artifacts. Choose your path as a roguish do-gooder, crafty space-trader or power-hungry privateer – or maybe a little of each! Buy larger and more powerful craft with your hard-earned credits, and outfit them with a variety of wicked weapons and defenses. Set in a galaxy of fantastic sights, and secrets to be found, Rebel Galaxy is above all a space epic of adventure, exploration, and combat.

The edge of the universe is a pretty dangerous place, so watch your back.
  • Captain a massive spaceship engaging in epic scale space battles.
  • Trade, negotiate, mine asteroids, hunt bounties, be a pirate and explore a randomized open-world galactic map.
  • Make your own path through a dialog-tree driven storyline making friends and enemies of a variety of alien factions

Should be great game but...

That game is not bad, but to the greatnes "it is" or "should be" hybrid of "Freelancer" and "Sid Meier Pirates!" to be great succesor but its not. Most of the game is "cowboy style 2D shooter" with some great music. Im playing few hours and on my account is houndreds of destroyed ships, its boring doing repeatable missions and i can have only one mercenary ship when the enemys have always dozens of small fighters around, game is stupid but well designed. With a lot of adjustment should be great. auto-Docking with station crap specialy when u fighting near, galactic map , no autopilot, grind mathodology new system > tier II> anothere system > tier III its standard but should be bettere. Scaning ships its ok or even i like it, auto cannos modes and mercenary targetying great, When they create hybrid of Freelancer and SM Pirates that should be the greates space sim / shooter / story telled game on world but we need still wate for this to happen...

Fun game but 2D only

If this game was 3D, I'd give it 5 stars. The game play and music are both good. The story and fun factor carry all the way to the end. By then I was decked out with the biggest ship and the best equipment of course and ready to do some damage. Managing your shields is job number one and be a bit aggressive and you will do just fine. If one side of shields is going down, let them hit another side. Spread out the shield damage and you will win. Runs fine out of the box on Linux Proton.

Shiny!

Fantastic! I'd been looking for something to scratch the space exploration and combat itch, but nothing in years seemed to do it. Elite Dangerous is a great sim, but an empty universe, SPAZ was close but no cigar... I tried them all. This game is a breath of fresh air, and remarkably it was basically done by one developer with a very small team. Some have complained about it being on a '2 1/2 D' plane instead of 6 DOF - I couldn't disagree more. The naval style broadsides combat suits perfectly; solid, challenging and just plain fun. There are well done aliens and NPC's, many factions, tons of ships and upgrades, great voice acting , and a fun story you can follow or choose to ignore, The 'verse is huge, each system full of worlds, stations, meteorite fields, drifting hulks, it goes on and on . Controller support, be a pirate, trader or hero, procedural universes for replays... I am having trouble leaving the couch. Everything looks beautiful, atmospheric and runs great on my 3 year old gaming PC. The developer is ridiculously responsive, and has the patience of a saint replying personally and even providing fixed games to those that had early bugs. (Seriously check the Steam forums) The soundtrack is spot on, featuring slide guitars and dark country (i.e. Blues Saraceno) for a gritty Firefly feel. You can also add/replace your own custom music playlists for various parts of the game such as ambient, combat, in-station, etc. I've already added some favorites. I don't usually gush about a game, but as an older gamer who misses the open universe worlds of games like the original Elite and just doesn't have the time to learn something complex like the X3 series - this is just what I was looking for. If you want to play in a world like Firefly or Dark Matter, this is it. Seriously - if it looks even remotely like your thing buy it now. Kudos to the developer and here's hoping he will make expansions to keep the adventures going for ages to come.

A great game building on the classics.

I just finished the main plotline with about 38 hours put into the game total. One of my favorite in the genre. You can see elements that got pulled in from older games. Apart from combat, which you have to accept will be fun but not particularly 'space-simmy'. You've got the Freelancer bits where you progress through the different systems. As you go the system tech levels get higher, the enemies get more dangerous, and the loot/shopping gets better. Everything else screams Privateer. The Mercenary & Merchants Guild are Privateer right down to the Guild Office menu you use to join and then just sits there for the rest of the game. The mission types, the cockpit banter, the cargo-drop demands, etc. Overall, it's an enjoyable power grind. The play-cycle goes: Take some missions, blow-stuff up, upgrade the ship, repeat. But the options for upgrading make it seem worthwhile. From shields that let you go from running away from big enemy to parking yourself next to them and firing away, to flak cannons that sweep enemy fighters off the map, to bigger ships with more guns making a much bigger and badder impression. You can do a few loadouts. I found a few that worked well enough to beat everything close to my tech level. I played a fast cargo hauler that avoided combat to start building up money, spent mid-game in a slow cruiser with plenty of firepower that went toe-to-toe with everything, and then did the end-game in the biggest dreadnought sitting at range firing artillery and missiles with flak brushing off fighters that got in close. The only weak points are the story and the soundtrack. The story is bare-bones. None of the characters have any motivation or depth. The world has almost no lore. What story there is you've seen before in Privateer/Darkstar One/Freelancer, only with less depth. It's mostly a guide to tell you when it's time to move onto the next system. The sound is good but repetitive. I think there's 3 songs with vocals and 2 instrumentals.

Overwhelmingly fun SP Space Shooter

This is an Indie Single Player Space Game. I was quite surprised how well it is done. The gameplay really focuses on the fun, just like a SP title should do. Just hop in, do missions, blow stuff up, upgrade, join factions and fly small and big ships. Awesomely fitting soundtrack. If you just wanna do some relaxing spacefighting without all the tedious things in EVE and without dedicating all your RL to it, go for this game. It is not full 3D, more like actual ship fighting in the ocean, but I totally support that design choice. Overall everything is designed extremely smoothly, and if you get the hang of it you can do everything you want really quick, so that the time flying and exploring is maximized. The content feels also of the right size, not so big, that there is an absurd learning curve, not too small so it gets boring too quickly. My first playthough lastet 50 hours. Then you can do a at least one replay with the opposite faction if you like to, after which you probably will put it aside for a while, but the itch might come back a few months later. My experience was also very bug free! This game is everthing it aspires to be. You will get really good, light hearted spaceship action for casual play or a few days straight if you totally binch it.
