It's quick game.
If you don't realize how broadside weapons working and "speed" is your friend, you throw your money out of window.
Everything on your ship is leveled from one to six and you can piloting everything from corvettes to real "Big Boy".
World isnt empty, militia, traders, pirates, they travel the same space with you. You can join mercenary and trading guilds as well.
Missions are funny and it's only way to make money. "Lot of money"
Graphically is, well, today looks still good. DirectX 11.
I enjoy it.

You drive a space truck around in a decently sized 2D galaxy. You warp for about 2 seconds at a time before pirates or something show up. Shoot space guns at each other
Fight, trade and do missions until you've got enough money for a bigger truck or better equipment. The progression/balancing is kinda weird. You're hopelessly outmatched until you buy one piece of equipment that is a higher tier than the bad guys. Then you're way overpowered. Each tier nearly doubles your stats.
The story's a bit short, but pretty fun. Good soundtrack.
Back in the late 90s I played Escape Velocity and loved it. For about 20 years I have been looking for a game to scratch that itch andf I have finally found it. So many other games have part of the core game play or have taken it and significantly overcomnplicated it. Rebel Galaxy takes what EV offered and upgrades the graphics and interface into something more fitting of today and doesn't try to do anything crazy with it.
In Rebel Galaxy you get a ship and are essentially sent out on your own to make your own destiny. Sure, there is a main quest, but it's more flavoring to the core game than it is directing it. The core game is taking on missions for factions, fighting other ships, trading, and upgrading your ship. It keeps itself really simple (though the economy can be aggravating sometimes) and lets you really dig into the core gameplay instead of overwhelming you with tons of extra mechanics and systems.
I do wish there were a bit more ships to choose from and I think having the faction ships be more unique and differentiated from each other would make the game a little better, but it's still a fun experience and well worth the price. My personal guidleine for a good game is an hour played for every doillar spent, and this game will easily beat that.
I ended up really liking this game but it took a good 5 hours or so to get into the game. Combat is different as you fight on a plane (no vertical). The ships all feel different and have many different weapons to load out on each. The story is present fairly well but it's not overly deep. It can take awhile to get some things done so you have to be a bit patient.
I really enjoyed this indie game. It is not on the same level with Freelancer or Privateer II, but those were AAA titles. For an indie game done by only 2 people it is a very impressive achievement and very entertaining!
I used the following ships (hulls) and all where quite good: Barracuda in the first system (and also for 2/3 of the game), later the Minotaur and at the end the Blackgate.
More important than the ship is the tech. Always level up to the next available Mk (1-6) in each new system. I always startet with Defense, then component engines and then weapons. Rest of components after that.
