Description
Rebel Galaxy is a swashbuckling space adventure, with action-packed combat, exploration, discovery, trade, and “negotiation” with the outlandish denizens at the edge of the known universe.

As the commander of an immensely powerful star destroyer, you’ll battle pirates, explore anomalies, befriend aliens, scavenge battle wreckage, mine asteroids, and discover artifacts. Choose your path as a roguish do-gooder, crafty space-trader or power-hungry privateer – or maybe a little of each! Buy larger and more powerful craft with your hard-earned credits, and outfit them with a variety of wicked weapons and defenses. Set in a galaxy of fantastic sights, and secrets to be found, Rebel Galaxy is above all a space epic of adventure, exploration, and combat.

The edge of the universe is a pretty dangerous place, so watch your back.
  • Captain a massive spaceship engaging in epic scale space battles.
  • Trade, negotiate, mine asteroids, hunt bounties, be a pirate and explore a randomized open-world galactic map.
  • Make your own path through a dialog-tree driven storyline making friends and enemies of a variety of alien factions

Streamlined 2D capital ship combat

In short Rebel Galaxy is essentially Privateer or Freelancer with a capital ship with movement restrictions in the 2D plane. Visually it looks like a well polished AAA game and really plays nice with a controller from the couch. The soundseffects are generally great too and as for the music it has some licensed modern country rock songs and while a good soundtrack overall the lack of different songs made me turn it off after a couple of hours. Double Damage did a good job designing the spacecraft, at least the larger ships look interesting as I never got a good look of the smaller fighter sized craft. Visiting space stations is very reminiscent of Privateer. It has all the amenities as ship and part dealers, commodities, bar, mission board, etc. It's lacking in the variety department though, it has a couple of dozen solar systems but there is nothing to differentiate between any of them, they look and play all the same. As for things to do, you have the main story line, which is not only very short, lengthened by the fact you need better equipment every time you progress, the story is also a bit generic, it's not bad but let's just say it won't win any prizes for it. Other than that the only thing you can do is the missions on the mission board. That's because trading isn't really an option, as these huge ships you fly have tiny cargo holds and space stations don't have a lot in stock. The other option is piracy but that just swaps fighting militia for pirates instead. And that is a bit of the crux with Rebel Galaxy that it is a bit too streamlined, there is no crew management, no real variety of locations, people and factions that matter and lacks any depth of tactical game play like carrying fighter aircraft for example. Still, I had a good time playing it for the first couple of hours, after that boredom crept up.

Really good

I like this game alot, never played something quite like it, really unique. It's sad that GOG didn't include gamepad support, i love playing with the gamepad. There's some third party software that can convert it to be able to play with a gamepad, so maybe i'll try that. edit: my gamepad works for this game now :D

If you want a Dreadnought...

It's quick game. If you don't realize how broadside weapons working and "speed" is your friend, you throw your money out of window. Everything on your ship is leveled from one to six and you can piloting everything from corvettes to real "Big Boy". World isnt empty, militia, traders, pirates, they travel the same space with you. You can join mercenary and trading guilds as well. Missions are funny and it's only way to make money. "Lot of money" Graphically is, well, today looks still good. DirectX 11. I enjoy it. On sale? Grab it...

Good space trucking for the price

You drive a space truck around in a decently sized 2D galaxy. You warp for about 2 seconds at a time before pirates or something show up. Shoot space guns at each other Fight, trade and do missions until you've got enough money for a bigger truck or better equipment. The progression/balancing is kinda weird. You're hopelessly outmatched until you buy one piece of equipment that is a higher tier than the bad guys. Then you're way overpowered. Each tier nearly doubles your stats. The story's a bit short, but pretty fun. Good soundtrack.

Escape Velocity for the current day

Back in the late 90s I played Escape Velocity and loved it. For about 20 years I have been looking for a game to scratch that itch andf I have finally found it. So many other games have part of the core game play or have taken it and significantly overcomnplicated it. Rebel Galaxy takes what EV offered and upgrades the graphics and interface into something more fitting of today and doesn't try to do anything crazy with it. In Rebel Galaxy you get a ship and are essentially sent out on your own to make your own destiny. Sure, there is a main quest, but it's more flavoring to the core game than it is directing it. The core game is taking on missions for factions, fighting other ships, trading, and upgrading your ship. It keeps itself really simple (though the economy can be aggravating sometimes) and lets you really dig into the core gameplay instead of overwhelming you with tons of extra mechanics and systems. I do wish there were a bit more ships to choose from and I think having the faction ships be more unique and differentiated from each other would make the game a little better, but it's still a fun experience and well worth the price. My personal guidleine for a good game is an hour played for every doillar spent, and this game will easily beat that.
