Raiden Legacy

Fantastic remake of the original arcade classic. The Raiden series was always a brutal bullet hell shooter with a one more go (coin) hyped feel. Spent countless hours at the arcade playing this, still refuse to use bombs!

A fun way to kill a few minutes. I don't know if it's just me but the user interface has strange delays of up to 10 seconds between mouse clicks. I have a decent system (7800x3d and a 7900xtx) so I don't know why it's happening. Also, even with my system specs I get occasional pauses. The games are playable with the controller but you would still need a mouse to use the user interface. Also the mouse pointer remains on screen. I also hated the default controller mappings. You might be better off with MAME, if you can figure out all the different ROM versions which is something I continue to fail at.

I feel like I shouldn't need to review Raiden to GoG shoppers. Suffice to say this is a very good, and most importantly, very user friendly package. Everything is wonderfully laid out. Games are quick and easy to swap to and from, and keybindings are shared between all four games. THIS is convenience done right in a compilation package.

This game (Raiden 1 in the collection) pretty much looks and sounds like an exact port of the arcade version. It blows the console versions out of the water. The SNES version is a joke (the graphics look cartoony, imo). The Genesis version is pretty good. But... Here's what Raiden Legacy (Raiden 1) has that the Genesis version (Raiden Trad) does not... Enemy planes catch fire before they go down, there are shadows, more detailed sprites, there are more enemies on the screen at once, and the pace is faster. Best of all, the music/sound really rocks w/ loads of bass (vastly superior to the console versions). The only negative... occasionally, you might notice a slight drop in framerate in fullscreen mode, probably due to the programming for this game being so ambitious and making it true to arcade. I set Aspect ratio = original mode (the screen is narrower) and the framerate smoothed out. My PC is a 2GHz dual core and 4GB ram.
