Quake

Map addons and multiplayer require a bethesda account to download and access servers. What's worse is that these appear to be region locked as well so even if you go through the waste of time to create an account you'll be presented with a generic "there was a problem connecting to bethesda.net" message and left playing only the base game on single player. Avoid this trash and play the regular Quake with a source port instead. Shame on gog for allowing this crap on the platform. "DRM free" my ass...

Install QuakeSpasm, then type in the console/include in the config file the folliwing commands: gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_linear r_particles 2 r_viewmodel_quake 1 r_lerpmove 0 r_lerpmodels 0 This will emulate the software renderer feel of the original but with modern tweaks. The first line removes texture blurring (okay with CRT monitors and Voodoo back in the day, not really nice to look at today); the second string brings back square particles; the third changes positioning of the weapon to the classic setup, and the next two remove model interpolation -- animations are kind of stop-motion as in the original. Have fun!

Review of the game, because the game doesn't need reviews, it's still great now. What I wanted to say it's to tell to the people complaining about this game to just shut the fuck up, you really complain about the graphics of a 25 years old game? Are you all dumb? You expect 2021 graphics from a 1996 game? How can you be so dumb, I really don't get it. Please just shut the fuck up, you make my head exploding hearing all these craps and retarded statements, go play that shit of Fortnite or other Battle Royal crap, it's better.

Most games don't age well. The few that do are rightly considered classics, and Quake is undeniably a classic. With it's sci-fi, high fantasy, Lovecraftian fantasy set among rocket jumps, awesome weapon design (Take the grenade launcher, which is something most modern shooters have now is astounding for back then), not to mention the lightning gun and the super nail gun) and an unbelievably creepy soundtrack by Trent Reznor, and an game changing multiplayer. One could say it holds up well. Or you could say that they don't make games like they used too. And you'd be right on both fronts You are armed with only an array of weapons, a gravity-defying jump, and some twitchy fingers against the hordes of Quake. I like this better than Doom,because this feels like what Doom was trying to go for, but ended up looking like a cartoon. And the enemies? They are your worst nightmares. Id wasn't content with just the hordes of hell this time. There's an ogre that looks like Leatherface's child, a yeti that shoots lightning, 8 foot tall demon knights that shoot....something that hurts, bouncing demons with scythes for arms. And all of these enemies are low-res poly textures. And they still scare the shit out of me. Those low grunts, moans, shrieks, and roars make those poorly textured enemies larger than life. Even choosing your difficulty makes you cringe as the difficulties range from boring creepy walls to jumping over a lava bed with writhing, crucified zombies (or people? I could never tell) to tell you whether your game will be easy or hard. And nightmare difficulty is hidden, so yeah. And by the way, you are just a lonely little ranger with paper mache for armor. This is 1996's FPS dark soul's. This is where the modern mechanics for FPS was born. As a screaming, festering, repugnant baby that came out of the womb armed with a chainsaw and a rocket launcher. God save your soul, ye who enter the realm of Quake.

This game is an old school, fast paced, run and gun fps like no other. It has a minimal story, a fitting soundtrack and suited sfx. It's dark, has gore and invented a formula that many still today try to copy. It has a somewhat story based on Lovecraftian elements and it is the natural evolution of the Doom formula. Doom started it, Quake made it better. This enhanced version makes it even more tasty and makes it easier to install on modern systems, giving it a touch of modern graphics and adding the soundtrack that is a problem to get working in older versions. For me, it is the Champion of the Fps genre, simple, fast and badass. Good old days, right here in Good Old Games.
