This release does contain the OSTs

As the topic comes up from time to time, I'd like to comment on the existence of the soundtracks for the Quake and both Mission Packs. This release will place 3 CD-images in the cue/bin format in the installation folder, which DO have the soundtrack for Quake (game.cue), Mission Pack 1 (gamea.cue), Mission Pack 2 (gamed.cue). The problem is that none of these will be mounted automatically when you play the Windows version "GLQuake". You could either 1) search for unofficial mods/patches which add the music, or 2) mount the corresponding CD-image under Windows, and see if the game finds the music tracks. (Haven't tried that one.) 3) This Quake release also supplies the original DOS version of Quake (v1.08), which you can use to play all content with. Provided, that you mounted the corresponding CD-image correctly under DOSBox with imgmount (the .cue file has to be pointed at).

No Soundtrack in game, Bad rating

The OST isn't included in this Game. I don't know if it's nine inch nails' copyright but i don't care. It isn't the original game, it's only a part of it, but not the full game. Very bad GOG and Bethesda. :(

Shub-Niggurath is here!

Grandpa of all modern shooters! Musthave in your collection. You should definitely play it with QuakeSpasm engine, which will give you vanilla 1996 feeling, but in FullHD: http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/download.htm Just unpack it in Quake's folder and run quakespasm.exe Additionally here you have huge library of single player maps: https://www.quaddicted.com/

Id's final masterpiece.

Playing this awesome shooter, you wouldn't guess it suffered a troubled development. This was John Romero's last great game. John actually did not envision this game as a Doom-like shooter, but instead as a barbarian fantasy game (he later said Darksiders is basically the game he wanted to make). Of course, his vision fell through what we got instead was sort of an updated Doom. The multiplayer was groundbreaking for its time, and although Doom's singleplayer is more widely remembered than Quake's, a case can be made for Quake's superiority. Quake's competition when it was released was Duke Nukem 3D, which I more or less view as Quake's equal. They were both great for different reasons. Duke featured a hilarious game world, colorful protagonist, fun weaponry, realistic urban locales, and best of all, highly interactive level design. Quake on the other hand features gothic atmosphere, horrifying-looking enemies, a Trent Reznor soundtrack (which I believe GOG included with their version of the game, unlike Steam), and the game world consists of this bizarre collage of sci-fi and dark fantasy which mesh together very well, creating a surreal nightmare world to explore. To boot, each had multiple expansions, which I'm happy to say GOG packaged into the game. Unfortunately, this was the end of Id's golden age. Romero left Id after tensions with Carmack escalated, and, well, Daikatana is also available on GOG if you want to see for yourself what happened there (but for heaven's sake, wait for a sale!). I highly recommend the book "Masters of Doom", an entertaining read which documents Id's rise and arguable fall. Although Quake 2 and especially Quake 3 were great in their own right, they were each lacking something: Quake 2's setting was dull and unimaginative compared to previous games, and Quake 3 lacked a singleplayer adventure altogether. You played these games for their fine multiplayer. Doom and Quake 1's standard was BOTH excellent singleplayer AND multiplayer.

Shaking the genre in 1996

Quake is my all time favorite first person shooter. It’s gothic atmoshpere, creepy monsters, dark ambient music, fast action is still unmatched in the genre. Quake was the first game where I saw polygon creatures, and their horrifying appeareances and voices can still make me nervous, be it a bloody black knight, an ogre with chainsaw and grenade launcher, or some lovecraftian shoggoth feces. The game offers several devices to murder them. They were not balanced with multiplayer in mind, thus rocket launcher and thunderhold are superior, but getting them and having enough ammo is not always possible. Resource management is important, be it health, ammo, or power ups. The levels are mostly non-linear and worth exploring, with brilliant vertical level design, large amount of secret places, and goddamn traps that can skullf*ck you like no other. The game has four episodes that can be played in whatever order you want, plus a final level. There are also secret levels for each episode. Along with Diablo and WarCraft II, Quake was the other game that moved the multiplayer revolution greatly forward with it’s well designed maps and fast paced deathmatch. DM3 and DM6 are still among the best multiplayer maps I’ve ever played on. The online presence gave birth to an online community, that created a huge number of maps and mods, and which is alive even today. The Capture the Frag mode, Team Fortress all started here. Quake is a must-have for all old-school FPS fans. The game aged pretty well, it’s gameplay is still exciting, the mood is still there, and the rough models and obscure textures fits the style id aimed for very well. If you are used to modern games and can’t stand the old graphics you can still download graphic engines like ezQuake and DarkPlaces, that not only improve visuals a lot, but they also make creating and finding multiplayer matches and handling mods easier. And kids, don’t forget to fire the thunderbolt underwater. It keeps the water clean.
