Quake

The only game in existence that gets better with age, like wine! Use it with QuakeSpasm engine, and I would recommend you to try Retro Map jams from Quaddicted.com, together with Rubicon/Rubicon2/Rubicon Rumble pack. 10/10

I've played Quake on CD ROM, the GOG release for Windows, and some of the source ports for Windows and Linux. I use the .PAK files from the GOG release with the Dark Places source port for Linux (Mint 17.3). Every version has been amazing. PROS: + Still very much Quake. + Includes the Mission Packs. + Creepy, Lovecraftian atmosphere. + One of the best single player FPSes ever made. Period. + Fun multiplayer, with servers running all over the place. + Modest hardware requirements. + Worth every penny at $10. CONS: - No music.* *If you have the soundtrack from your old CD ROM, you can rip it as MP3/WAV/OGG and use it in one of the Quake source ports. There are how-tos all over the web.

Make no mistake, this is one of the greatest FPS games ever. It's frantic, gothic, and horrifying in a way few games can even come hope to match, a gem of the golden age of FPS games. Now it's even BETTER, since the package includes not only the original game, but also the enhanced version, which runs brilliantly on modern hardware, and with even more levels to boot! If I -MUST- criticize this game, the color palette is severely lacking compared to other titles out at the time. It's unrelentingly monotonous in tone, the very definition of a "brown" game, where there's very little in the way of color, a trend that would overwhelm western game design soon after, as many games in the 2000s employed the sort of limited, drab color palette that would come to define western games for the decade and even into the early 2010s. However, don't let the color palette scare you off. It may not be the most aesthetically exciting game in the world, but make NO mistake, this is the essence of the all-action FPS, what is now called a "boomer shooter" by some. If you like that kind of game, you OWE it to yourself to get this amazing title.

I truly believe that Quake is a better FPS than most of those that came after it. It’s not one of those culturally significant but poorly aged titles that you force yourself to get into without having that much fun: like Doom before it, it’s a classic that most players today, kids and grown-ups alike, will still have a blast playing! It is a masterpiece of action. Its minimalist control scheme, even lacking an “interact” key, encourages you to go berserk with a set of simple-to-master yet powerful and versatile guns, while all of the complexity of the gameplay comes from the level design and enemy behavior. The game is all about finding keys and switches to unlock the next door and learning how to efficiently dispatch each monster type: it’s a simple, fun and stimulating slaughterfest which is challenging but rarely unfair. While Quake’s graphics have their detractors (it’s very... brown), its atmosphere has aged superbly. The excellent texture work and soundtrack make for a uniquely eerie experience, set in an alien world full of hostile locations and terrifying creatures. This vibe combined with the “lo-fi” 3D definitely has a lot of charm, and it’s no surprise that it still inspires shooters like Dusk or Wrath: AoR to this day. Most of my issues with Quake amount to nitpicks (like how half the weapons become obsolete once you obtain their more powerful counterparts), but it also has serious imperfections. Excessively cramped fight chambers filled with frustrating monsters are common annoyances, especially in the much-maligned, slime-infested fourth episode of the main campaign. In spite of that, it’s definitely worth playing. Getting it to run well on modern system used to be a bit of a hassle, but this recent “enhanced edition” works perfectly fine and is faithful to the original release in its gameplay and visuals (although it sadly restricts access to mods). It also allows you to play both original expansions PLUS two new ones, guaranteeing hours of fun!

The other reviews are from befor the game got the enhanced edition. The enhanced edition has the soundtrack. The OG version does not. The enhanced edition has controller support also so yay. As far as I'm aware if you buy the game on other platforms (like steam or epic games) you don't get the OG version if you ever need it for mods. I like how the google play store tells you what version a person was using when they reviewed an app. then you could see what reviews only talk about the OG version without the sound track. - 1 stare because of having to log into Bethesda to do any online stuff
