Description
Your father was brutally murdered before your eyes. Now you must train hard, eat chicken and punch dudes in the face to earn your place in the Punch Club ranks, and discover who ended your father's life.

Punch Club is a boxing tycoon management game with multiple branching story lines. Your goal is clear, but how you get there depends on whether you want to legitimately climb the rankings, or take the more ridiculous, shady route.

Along the way you'll want to focus your talents. Will you take the Way of the Tiger, the Way of the Turtle, or the Way of the [other one?]? Your strength, accuracy and agility all depends on whichever Way enlightens your path. Do you have stripes, or flippers?

And every decision will matter, especially in your social life. You'll be juggling friendships, love life, work, recreational time, relationships, and possible stardom, all alongside your gym time and fighting alligators. It's not all just pumping iron, you know.
  • Fighter management sim with RPG and tycoon elements.
  • Find out who killed your father, and maybe learn something about yourself along the way.
  • Heavily story-driven, with multiple different narrative branches and game endings to discover.
  • Get as deep with stats as you like, and find your own way through extensive skill trees.
  • Gorgeous pixel visuals with 80-90s references and nostalgia all over the place.

Colossal waste of time

The game sells itself as a sort of 'boxing RPG' or training sim, but all it is is watching meters fill and numbers go up while occasionally watching your character trade punches with a parody of a character from an action game or movie. If it were at least charming, it could get away with a lot, but the writing is stilted and mostly asinine. The game ends with a joke before the last battle you've been working towards, rendering the game utterly pointless even in its own context. The thing you're working towards never happens. It fails as a game, it fails as a parody, it even fails as a waste of time. It is barely a game. It is an interactive loading screen. Please do not buy Punch Club.

Long build up... minimal pay off

Okay, this is a grinding game, and doesn't pretend to be anything else, you need to grind for your three stats as they lessen each day you don't work on them (like in real life) and you need to balance your training with work and sleeping (like in real life). And you won't get far if you try to eat your cake and have it too. The game is not without a few tiny bugs here and there, but thankfully nothing that make it unplayable or is too distracting. The game's pixel art is beautiful. It knows who its audience is and has some nice parody moments. And the game's plot twists are strange, but aren't self contradicting. This game takes a good WHILE to beat! ... And that's the problem. After hours and hours and hours of grinding, building up your character, after through so many plot twists and surprises... being knocked down and grinding again and refusing to give up... what you think is the penultimate boss turns out to be the final boss, and after one final classic twist with the main villain... that's it. The entire story, the ENTIRE GAME, ends on that plot twist. It just goes straight to the credits. And that's it. That by itself would be forgivable since it ends with 'to be continued'. EXCEPT!!!... All that hard work you put into your character? ... Goodbye. Poof. That's it. You CAN'T play with your character AFTER the final boss! AGAIN, this wouldn't be TOO BAD, except you AUTOMATICALLY face the final boss as soon as you meet the criteria instead of being asked 'are you ready?' Basically, this game is about hard work and the mindless routine we must endure for success... but the ends on a sudden twist that explains the opening, and we aren't even allowed to play our character afterwards. If you open up your save file, the characters just stand there doing nothing and not responding to the controls. So yeah, long hard adventure, cheap ending.

Waiting game

I really wanted to enjoy this game. But I didn't. First of all I'm grateful for the graphical design and the collection of pop culture references throughout the game. The multilanguage support was good too. I just don't find this game fun. It's grinding. Some of yours numbers are constantly falling down and you send your avatar to build them up. There is a variety of actions to build up your numbers some of which are unlocked throughout the game, The love and injury effects are a nice touch to play with your numbers some more. However at it's core it's just a waiting simulator. When the numbers fall down you have to bring them up and it takes a while of grinding to pin the numbers in position. Even if you do nothing and past the day the numbers fall down too. How can you improve this game? I respect there was efforts made to add variety but it would really benefit from making the core mechanics a bit more forgiving. Perhaps decreasing the rate of fall and increasing the rate of rising each important stat. I know there is a story I'm not advancing into but this is my second attempt and I am still going through the same grind. I'm uninstalling it.

A Good Grind

Punch Club brings back memories for me. The art style, the music, the punch, punch, punching. If you played games in the late eighties to mid-nineties, games like Punch-Out!, and enjoyed beating the tar out of those freaks, then you will probably love this game. I sure do. Now to be fair this game isn't like Punch-Out! in that you don't actually control your fight mono-a-mono. Instead, before each round, you select from an assortment of RPG-like skills that are then randomly used. Things like thunderbolt punches, or karate kicks, blocks, or even taking a breather. Now in order to get the really gnarly moves you have to win a lot of fights, train a lot of times and earn skill points to unlock them. As the title of this review states this game is a grind. As time passes each day you loose some of your strength, stamina, and agility, and it takes a lot of effort to get it back. If you don't like any type of grinding, this game may not be for you, without this mechanic though one could probably win it in 3 or 4 hours. And if you are like me, this games atmosphere and fighting spirit are worth the grind; in fact it is like a Thanksgiving feast, worth savoring pound by glorious pound. Now get out the jump rope kid, pound down the pizza, and hit this like 1990.
