Zen Studios’ modern homage to classic first-person dungeon-crawlers takes you to the land of Operencia, an unconventional fantasy world inspired by a faraway land referenced in countless Central European folktales. An old-school turn-based battle system combines with inspiration from unexplored mythology to offer an RPG experience that feels unique yet also familiar.
An unknown force has abducted the Sun King Napkiraly, leaving Operencia in a state of perpetual darkness – and eventual doom. From hidden royal tombs and cursed castles to an ascent up the World Tree to reach the Copper Forest of the Land of the Gods, explore diverse settings throughout the far reaches of the land…and beyond. Each location boasts its own unique atmosphere, visual style, level design and puzzles, and many take place entirely outdoors.
Operencia is home to an intriguing mix of unexplored mythology and fantastical versions of actual historical locations (e.g., Deva Fortress, Balvanyos) and characters (e.g., Attila, Seven Chieftains of the Magyars), all coming together to form one cohesive new gaming universe. Several of your own seven party members take influence from heroes of forgotten tales told hundreds of years ago, such as the brave knight Mezey and Sebastian the Dragon Slayer.
Along with a deeply strategic turn-based battle system full of spells and special skills to execute, tile-based movement encourages thorough exploration of each area. For added challenge, turn on Cartographer mode to plot out each of the 13 maps yourself. How many secrets will you find?
Breathtaking hand-drawn cutscenes and fabulous 2D character portraits bring the story to life in a style not easily compared to any other game. More than 30 colorful characters are fully voiced through top-tier performances authentic to the game’s Central European roots.

AAA Indie production quality and polish with top-tier voice acting, soundtrack, cutscenes and writing
I found this recommended on a LoG forum. Can I recommend it in the same vein? Not really. Exploration might have a DM "style," but in terms of combat, it's a turn based JRPG.
Lots of systems - abilities, control or nullifiers, damage types, and immunities - most of which you won't get to know about until you're in combat.
After being forced to fight (and die) repeatedly, then respec (at least respecs are free) to work out how to to progress, I eventually decided it wasn't worth carrying on, put this down after the 5th map boss, and won't be going back to it.
Some interesting maps, some amusing banter between characters, but not really enough to carry the game when your progress get cheaply blocked by something with an ability you can not anticipate and are the "wrong build" for.
Played the game through Epic,
It did not dissapoint. Amazing fields, there are some great character conversations. Combat can be pretty satisfying.
All in all i would grant the title a solid recommendation for both new and veteran players of the genre
Considering the genre and the quantity of predecessors is very difficult to ignore the flaws of this game. Sure, the presentation with the good models, the astonishing backgrounds and general ambience yeah they are above average for the genre, however the rpg and gameplay mechanics are too much basic, i mean i can find better customization of a spellcaster on a game from 1980 and better diversity between classes and party characters. In this genre of games few is not good. Itemization is convoluted and redundant, there are too many items which difference is +1 on a stat.
Puzzles are good but the encounters are incredibly boring cause the game considers you can change all your characters (from the stats to ability) every time you want, so there is basically no difficulty, if you fail an encounter you can just respec and counter it completely. It's very bad seeing a mindset like this, considering you are binded to do every encounter since they are numbered and there is no respawn.
The story is good, the characters are ok even if some of them lose interactions over half the game.
Its a good game but very flawed if you have some background of the genre, i really hope for another game with more depth on the gameplay and not only on the visuals.
It is easier than Grimrock, and I like it, puzzles are not so complicated. Story is decent, different than anything else but not very engaging. Characters are likeable. There are variety of enemies, some are easy to defeat, some are irritating, towards endgame they are more powerfull, which makes it quite interesting to try out different skills, party formations and items. You can respec as many times as you like, to adapt best to the upcomming battles, which is a plus. Exploration is nice as game tells you how many secrets are left to be discovered. Map has many markers so its easy to go back and explore for skipped secrets. Only 3 crashes happend during my walkthrough, no gamebreaking bugs.
All of this unperfect, but decent parts, magically make a very good game, which even made me stay with it untill completion. This doesnt happen often in my case, thats why 5 stars.
I found this to be a pretty fun dungeon crawler. The story is interesting enough, even if it does poke fun at itself here and there, and for the most part the characters are interesting if a little one note. I liked the choice the supporting characters, for the most part, are older and have lived a life before finding themselves in their current situation.
The graphics in the game are good and the sound is decent.
The game has the control scheme of a modern dungeon crawler and the keyboard and mouse can be used or if desired a controller.
Gameplay is the usual explore, fight monsters, and find stuff. There are plenty of secrets to unearth in the game. There is also a bit of crafting in the form of potions that can be found. The game also has various tools that can be used to interact with the enviroments.
Buffs and debuffs do matter in this game. If you don't use them, for the most part, then the game will be difficult. The only execption to this is that some of the boss fights are simply endurance tests with RNG thrown in. Even if the right abilitis are used sometimes the game just decides that you are going to have to reload no matter what you do. It can be annoying but it doesn't happen too much.
If you like fantasy dungeon crawlers give this one a look.
