Description
Noita is a magical action roguelite set in a world where every pixel is physically simulated. Fight, explore, melt, burn, freeze and evaporate your way through the procedurally generated world using spells you've created yourself. Explore a variety of environments ranging from coal mines to freezing wastelands while delving deeper in search for unknown mysteries.

  • Pixel-based physics: Every pixel in the world is simulated. Burn, explode or melt anything. Swim in the blood of your foes! Enter a simulated world that is more interactive than anything you've seen before.
  • Your own magic: Create new spells as you delve deeper into the caverns. Use magic to crush your enemies and manipulate the world around you.
  • Procedurally generated world: Explore a unique world every time you play. Discover new environments as you adventure deeper.

  • Action roguelite: Death is permanent and always a looming threat. When you die, don’t despair, use what you’ve learned to get further on your next adventure.

Noita is being developed by Nolla Games, a company set up by 3 indie developers, all of whom have worked on their own projects in the past.

The three gents in question are:

Petri Purho
Petri is best known as the creator of Crayon Physics Deluxe. In his youth he also made a lot tiny freeware games. He has also made a bunch of board games, but he hasn't told about it to anyone. So please keep it a secret.

Olli Harjola
Olli released his first commercial game The Swapper in 2013. Besides indie games, he also dabbles in music, live visuals and making programming languages.

Arvi Teikari
Arvi is also known as Hempuli. Over the years he has released a lot of tiny experimental games, so many in fact that he is unaware of all of them. One of the games he remembers making is Baba Is You.

Good but could be better

I like the idea of this game very much. I spent hours in Terraria just toying with lava pools or water and I always wondered why there are not many good games like that. I also spend hours in Noita so from this perspective I could recommend this game (especilly if there is discount). However, even for a "roguelike" the game is simply too random: - spells and wands seem to give you immensive choice of options but in reality - only some effects and combinations are useful (or not too lethal to the user). Sooner or later you will end up with e.g: one "machinegun" wand, one explosive wand (to destroy walls), and one-two "toolbox" wands for some seemingly interesting effects (like creating water, acid, teleporting etc.) that will be rarely used. That of course depends on luck. Sometimes you will find great, useful wands at the first level, sometimes never; - The maps sometimes give you cool possibilities (like flooding rooms with acid, setting fires, collapsing walls etc.) but since they are randomly generated its usualy nothing even close to what trailers show you; - Depending on luck the game can be super irritating or super easy. There are wand effects like "matter eating" (allowing to dig in any material) and e.g. means to "fly" indefinetly. With a bit of luck you can enter "god mode" and go through the whole map and secrets without any problems. With less luck you will just spend some tiresome hours with this game to end being killed by some random monster or effect. Since the game is still being developed I hope they will add some options to it to make it less random, like: - at least small possibility to keep some achievments/equipment between the runs - more possibilities to modify the wands and the character in the temples. Perhaps some basic effects always available to buy? Giving two perks would be good to - if their power level was more balanced. - more preset quest locations (Pyramid with a special monster to kill is a good example how it shood work).

Suprising amount of depth

While the actual dungeon design is nothing special, there is a lot more to Noita meets the eye at first. Unlike a lot of other roguelikes putting in some thought to your builds can have a huge effect. Once you have a feel for the basics of the game, I would recommend looking up a wand building guide online and/or installing a wand testing mod to learn how to build wands. Practice building wands and you can build crazy world destroying wands from components you would have ignored before. There are also a crazy amount of secrets and the world is infinite as far as I can tell. With a good digging wand you can go through anything and you don't have to go down the cave at the start... Downsides: There is no progression and you will start every run pretty much the same. (Some spells don't show up in the loot pool until you find them in special ways/areas but that is pretty minor) Unless you go online, chances are you will miss out on whole side dungeons. The map is gargantuan compared with the areas you go through for the standard runs. You pretty much need to google wand building to really understand how to make good wands beyond the basic "this spell has good damage, I'll shove it in my wand"

Boundless fun, but...

This might be the most fun game of all time. There's plenty of detail why in the other reviews. Like all games with that term in the description, it could do with a save function. "Roguelike" is not a virtue, it's not 1987, we have the technology to save game progress now. So much fun and exploration to be had but losing everything because the randomness has suddenly spawned 3 generator enemies, or being one-shotted from off-screen by something you couldn't see, or losing 1/3 of your health because you didn't see the shotgun guy the required half-second before you possibly could have, all leave a bad taste. "Balance issues" as my friend succinctly put it. It would be good if there was a guarantee of starting with a useful potion; water or brine. How is a snow or mud or polymorphine potion supposed to help? So Much Fun Despite the gripes.

Meh.. intresting ideas, boring execution

Well, there is reasons why average playing time is only 14 hours - which is extremely small for that kind of genre. I gave this game two chances for 2-3 hours and regretted it every time. Passing is very off - we have The Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy, Hades and many other similar games with good passing. Your start can be rough, but the more you play and open items/powers - the more fun and easy first levels will be. Here you always start with shitty pew-pew staff, some bomb staff and sometimes totally useless "potion". But you can simply speedrun to the next hub and don't collect anything - great yes? No. • Yes, you can mix spells and create interesting effects... but only in the "Hub" between levels - why? • You can open new magic and staffs, but can't use even few of them from beginning a new game. Only random bad pew-pew staff. • You have ZERO progression and you are the same every new start. • You can have very bad pew staff... and you better get used for that, because game can decide to don't spawn any other staff on entire level. • Fog of war... this game is dark, and unlike Terraria this fog of war is useless - all pickups are shining thru walls and darkness and almost every enemy have glowing part. So why do we need this darkness around character? • Spawning enemies - you think that this is a safe spot? No, run here again and you will find a flying acid spiting blob. • Speacial events - hey, you dying a lot, lets make this time even harder for you! No, do not use this kind of events when player can't reach even 3 level. • Boring music + blank pixel art + repetative gameplay + wrong difficulty passing + locked mechanics just because = waste of your time. There a lot of simillar games in this genre to play, take notes and inspiration - here I see none of that here. Every time I tried to play this game - every time this game clearly hints me that she does not want to be played. Sorry, but this game needs a lots of balancing and reworks.

If you like being a god, then maybe

I have maybe about 80-100 hours and 100 deaths. I struggle a bit in deciding the score for Noita. I like the game; I've played it a lot lately. But the more I play, the less I feel like recommending it. In the beginning Noita is probably a hard game. You die quite easily, healing is scarce, your gun is not very good, and you probably aren't paying enough attention to the wand modification part of the game (the heart of the game). Then you start paying attention to that modification and you start recognizing some key ingredients in making powerful guns. After a while you realize the ingredients for some pretty decent guns are actually quite common, and the ingredients for kill-everything-in-less-than-a-second guns are not that rare either. Maybe your wand shoots very fast and, upon hitting enemies, fires a drilling beam at them. Or maybe a beam of damage circles your projectiles, which home in on enemies. Whichever the case, you point, shoot and feel good about yourself. After doing this for a while I, as usual, started feeling there's really no point to the game. I go whereever I want, kill everyone and will not die if I'm careful. There's no balance to the game at all. A lot of stuff is OP, a lot absolutely useless, a lot gimmicky but practically pointless, some "perks" are actually harmful and so on. The pixel world creates some annoyances, like getting stuck in the world because there's one pixel of ground in the way, or getting damaged because there's one pixel of damaging terrain, vapor, or liquid somewhere. It's often really infuriating. The game is buggy, and apparently abandoned as well, so... Some items disappear if sent too far off-screen. Bosses might dig into the terrain (what they're supposed to do), but vanish completely because the game stops rendering them when they're too far, or whatever. The engine often struggles with all the mayhem you're making. I like the game, but would advice others to find something better to play.
