These are two of my favorite games of all time -- and the versions on GOG are great -- really smooth and compatible with both my XP and Windows 7 computers.
If you like strategy games, check this out. You should also check out FreeOrion - finally somebody came out with MOO3 (wink wink).
I still have my copy of 2 and i remember how stoked i was when MOO3 came out. Let me just say i prefer 2 over 3. 3 was overly complex and really killed the fun factor that 2 had. I loved how random things were and it was almost impossible to win in a star system that was not small, haha. great game :)
One of the greatest 4x experiences I have ever enjoyed, hands down. A true 4x that I believe every new game could take some hints from. Absolutely addictive, great memories, 5/5.
Bought MOO and XCOM when I bought my first computer in 1994. Here we are in 2012 and I still remember how much fun both of these games were. The replay value for MOO is unmatched! Perfectly balanced game that requires management of resources, a strategic plan, good ship designs, and a little luck on the harder difficulties. Blackhole generator on a fleet of 1000 small ships...so much fun!! $6 is a steal for MOO...getting MMO2 too makes it a no brainer.
I never got into playing Master of Orion 1. But when I started playing Master of Orion 2, I fell in love. It is a game that will NEVER get old and remain a golden classic.
You can customize your ships with a variety of weapons, shields, armor, computers, equipment and engines.
You can research a large variety of items to aid your colonies, your empire, diplomacy, weapons, etc. What I love is how they hint at influence from Star Trek and Star Wars. I love the fact that your largest and most powerful star ship is a "Doom Star", a massive small moon which can then be equipped with a "Stellar Converter" the planet destroyer gun.
This is a game for EVERYONE too play. Casual and hard core. It is gorgeous in art, game play, originality and excitement.
The only downside is that the multi player is non existent anymore. Since the game relied on an older version of online play which is now obsolete.
