Painfully Slow To Play

I've given this game a good go and do actually enjoy it but progress even three maps into the campaign just becomes painfully slow. As others have pointed out the Ai is a bit overpowered to say the least and the game is in no way forgiving on the player. As such the only consistent stratergy to win seems to be to turtle down defend what you have and slowly grind the Ai down through attrition to its economy. The only problem is this will take you 5 or 6 hours even by the third campaign map. There is some fun to be had on some of the skirmish maps once in a while, and the fundermentals of the gameplay are fun but unfortuantly play out in a way that makes the game horrifically slow to play on the campaign especially.

Let slip the cows of war

Cows are central to my war effort. Swords and soldiers, weapons and warriors? They matter as well. I mean, they certainly have their place in the grand scheme of things, but cows are the real backbone. My war-drums are the thunder of a thousand bovine hooves. Because Lords of the Realm 2 is a game of economic balancing masquerading as a game of military warfare. Battles are won with strong armies, but armies don't feed themselves and troops don't grow in vats. The same population that provides your soldiers also makes your blacksmiths and your farmers. If everybody is drafted into your army, who will feed and arm them? On the flip side, if everybody is busy tending turnips then who goes off to war? It's this balancing act which lies at the base of every decision. It's very easy to misjudge things – you send half the town away to war, knowing it'll be an easy win, and six months later they are still sieging the castle while the harvest rots in the field. Should you have sent less people? Would a smaller army have had a chance at capturing that county? Like I say, it's a constant economic balancing act. As for the rest of the game, it holds up well. The battles are fun and the characters nicely defined – you can recognise the difference between, say, the treacherous Countess or the brash Knight. The controls haven't aged very well and some of the difficulty options are quite well hidden, but there’s an easy charm to the game that transcends its creaking bones. So give 1996 another chance, but remember - the sickle is mightier than the sword.

Great Classics

I remember getting the original Lords of The Realm back in elementary school. I played and played and played. I really enjoyed it.I recently saw this (After a long time ago getting rid of my pc game collection) and remembered why it was I spent so much time playing it. The game is very similar to the Total War series in terms of you build up your counties create troops than can control the battle field. It is something that will keep you entertained for many a night.

An amazing RPG/RTS

I own all three of these Lords of the Realm games, and have played them on and off for the past 14 years. Quite possibly my favorite games of all time, Lords of the Realm I and II are incredible RTS/RPG combination, with great handling of Medieval Europe. This game is a must buy.

One of the Greatest Games of all time...

This is probably one of my favorite strategy games of all time. Playing this in the late 90's, it had amazingly good graphics, decent maps, and the gameplay still is the best although I've played many more games since.
