Good memories

Oh, Good Old Games, how happy I am that you have this game in your collection! I still remember this thrill when I got my first PC (until then I was using my father's PC). It was back in 1997 - beautiful Pentium 166MMX, 15" monitor. Oh joy of joys! The game that I got with it was Lords of the Realm 2. I started playing and I just couldn't stop. I was trying new tactics all the time, I just loved those battles. Surely, I got surprised my a plague or two, but the game was and is amazing. Thank you for bringing those memories back! And the game still rocks!

Classic, and always scratches the itch

Never played the first, but LotR 2 is a game that is always on my HD, and one that always gets played a couple of times per year. Yeah, it's not as in depth and challenging as some of the new total war games, but it's got everything you want if you like these games. The beauty of it is that it's simple, fun, and easy to just sit down and play for half an hour. You can't really get a whole lot better than this.

Amazing, but outdated AI

LOTR 1 crashes when I try to launch it... LOTR 2 was one of my favorites from childhood and I still play it off and on to this day. The expanded campaign is really cool with some huge maps. Definitely check out advanced farming for a more nuanced challenge. My main gripe is most games play the same because the AI is downright terrible at battles. They can be kinda ok in the open field if the luck into a good defensive position before you can attack and have enough archers. You can still route them regularly with speedy units (macemen or knights), even vastly outnumbered. But they cannot lay siege to the two best castles at all. They have no idea how to coordinate digging through a moat or move away from the cauldrons of fiery oil you drop on them. And the auto calc is even worse, I think it's impossible to take a royal castle using auto calc, even with a capped out army of 1500. You can just turtle up in every game and stockpile gold and weapons until the right moment to strike. The AI is pretty good at going scorched earth with tiny armies destroying all your fields, but if you have a castle they will stop doing this and send giant armies to break against your walls. This could have been countered by making some maps have challenges like to win by a certain turn, or other objectives like not letting the AI capture some county. Other than that, fantastic game.

Great Classic

I own the original on CD and love it. (LOTR 1 allows you to conquer Germany instead of England if you want to.) I think it may be worth a few bucks to get GOG's packaged version so I don't have to fight with Windows anymore. Getting LOTR 2 would just be even better.
