I was playing only in the first part of Lords of the Realm. It's a game with a great playability. You may look at graphics and say that is terrible but after 10 minutes you will change your mind. Of course LOTR isn't for everybody but if you like the Middle Ages and economic games you should take a look at this one. It's really worth that!
The Lords of the Realm 2 is the 2nd best turn-based strategy game I've played (Alpha Centauri takes the top spot). haven't played 1.
The basic setup is that you are one of the local leaders in a European (or geometrically-shaped) country of your choice. The goal is to wipe out all the NPC opponents and become the King. Historically appropriate random events happen, the NPCs are fairly aggressive (maybe not very strategic) and actually feel like opponents.
The game is laser-focused when compared to most TBS - only one race, small maps, limited resources in each location. But that lets players focus more heavily on certain aspects of strategy - instead of city-building and micro-management, you spend time on setting up a viable regional economy, including sending supplies to and from counties. The NPC characters are larger-than-life in all the right ways, so you really feel satisfaction when you crush them under your iron-shod boots. Voice-acting is limited but really good and conveys a sense of personality. My favorite one is the announcer who lets you know how your peasants are doing. He always sounds like a slightly harried steward to me. :)
The way information is presented to the player never feels overwhelming, but you can always find the details that you need and the controls are obvious. I was able to pick the game up again after a decade and jump right in. There are also options to make the economic management more difficult if you want.
The tactical battle-simulations are predictable and not as in-depth as more modern titles. On the other hand, Alpha Centauri and other turn-based strategy games don't even offer the option of tactical battle-simulation unless you get the Total War series, which is years later than Lords of the Realm.
TL;DR I really enjoyed this game even though I don't often enjoy strategy games. My friends really enjoy this game even though they *do* really enjoy strategy games. The music is good, the gameplay is good, the voice-acting is good, the interface is good.
