While not a fan of dungeon crawlers I fell in love with the first Grimrock. I didn't know how well the second game would live up to the first, but I'm happy to say that I was blown away. Almost Human expanded on and greatly improved the original concept. Throughout the game I always felt immersed, entertained and busy.
I really didn't like the first one. The game felt more tedious than fun and I could only push myself to about the halfway point of the game, but this game provides a lot of improvements over the first and now I'm totally hooked. Puzzles aren't really that difficult but are difficult enough to be satisfying when you solve them, combat is surprisingly fluid and has a sort of rhythm to it once you get used to it, and the variety in areas as well as a more open map makes the game feel much more satisfying to explore. I can understand how mechanically this game might turn some people off, especially if you aren't fond of older rpg's but I really didn't find this game annoying or unbearably janky like a lot of the games this game references (I just cannot for the life of me get into either of the Ultima Underworlds no matter how much I want to like those games). Also, if you're looking for a good story with world building and character development this is not the game for you.
this is a great and fun game. i went into this not being a fan of or ever playing the games it is an homage to. i really enjoy the how combat works and the general gameplay loop. the only minor critiques i have are the food system and the puzzles.
you have to eat in this game, and you get hungrier either with each step or over time. if you are stupid like me you will be walking around a lot to solve the puzzles. there is limited respawning of enemies that drop food, ive never run out, but i have had to backtrack just to refill my supplies. its not unbalanced or anything like that, i just dont like the time pressure being added to trying to solve puzzles.
4 stars ONLY because there are things in the game not to my taste. nothing wrong with the mechanics themselves.
Grimrock 2 is a sequel with improvements across the board. Instead of one giant dungeon, players get to explore a variety of gorgeous landscapes and mini-zones. There's more bosses and all of 'em are fun and challenging. Puzzles are still everywhere, but their solutions are (mostly) easier to solve. The story is pretty light and there are no cutscenes, but i personally believe this fits the game better and keeps the focus on the puzzles and combat. Magic, alchemy and the rest of the in-depth gameplay mechanics are handled better and easier to navigate.
It's honestly a bummer there aren't too many dungeon crawlers like these, because Grimrock 2 was fleshed out extremely well, performs great with no crashes or stutters, and has a steady difficulty curve. Legend of Grimrock 2 delivers a great oldschool RPG experience and is an easy recommendation.
Somehow i couldn't get into the first game. But this one is much more interesting.
Good old classic dungeon crawler but with a lot more variation than the first game. More interesting areas, enemies, loot etc.
Only problem is that the puzzles are often very hard and sometimes i just didn't have a clue how to find out what to do, hence a lot of googling.
At times it can be pretty hard, but this is one of those games where you actually feel stronger and stronger the further it goes, which i love.
