Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

I played squared dungeon crawlers long ago (Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Bard's Tale, Black Crypt, Ishar, Lands of Lore, Captive, etc...). I replay these games time to time (thx Dosbox) and I often regret this genre.
Grimrock has been the answer, and now I wait for the second opus quite impatiently !! :D
I'm a bit torn - on the one hand, I love the return of old school puzzley dungeon crawls, and I think the game does a good job of it. Unfortunately, I can only play for short periods, because the flicker of the torhces is apparently triggering my migraines (it seems to be mostly when they're about to go out).
Designers couldn't know that (I would never have guessed it myself), and they shouldn't be penalized for it, but if you suffer from migraines, I recommend you try it for a bit before you buy, or make sure you can return it.
This is basically what I was expecting, bringing back memories of Eye of the Beholder and other classic dungeon crawlers - which is to say that this is a very good thing. Easy to get into without reading the manual, always feeling like something new is right around the next corner, waiting to find that next spell - all good. Based on longer play time my rating may go up or down, but so far I am not disappointed.
First off, the reason I say "from awesome developers". Almost Human actually cares about their customers. There was one guy that wrote in shortly after game announcement asking if it could be played completely through the mouse. This person had some physical challenges and wouldn't be able to play if it needed the keyboard. Almost Human added in a feature specifically so that he'd be able to play the game. This was only one sale and took some programming time to accomplish.
On to the game. It brings back so many memories of my childhood, not only from this genre, but the sense of challenge this game can present. Sometimes, the game seemingly puts you in a no win situation. Seemingly because once you get over the "oh I'll mass attempt it" mentality that today's games encourage, and actually think about the situation, you'll see that the game's layout will present an answer. This sense of challenge and "oh crap" moments is what games have missed for a while now.
So if you grew up in the 80's or love games hard games from that period, you'll love LoG. If you think that a company that cares about its customers should be supported, you'll love Almost Human.
Classic hardcore gaming here is, and it's name is Legend of Grimrock. This game is hard. Very hard. And that is a good thing. Too long have gamers been coddled by wimpy, boring, lifeless gameplay that constantly holds your hand with boring mindless cinematic filler drivel and crappy characters, lousy voice acting, and lame plots that you don't care about. This is 100% gameplay. No filler. If Eye of the Beholder were made today, this is exactly what it would be. And it's amazing. The opening theme song which is both adventurous and strangely sad, is destined to become a classic. Then you actually start playing. The incredible atmosphere, creepy sound effects, traps, puzzles, and hidden secrets around every corner are tough, but never to the point of being unfair or cheap. This is a game of thinking, patience and strategy. If you run into a room all barrels blazing, you are dead. Period. I would keep on writing this review, but I have to go and play more LOG before I start having withdrawls..... Right. Now. TO THE DUNGEON!
