Legend of Grimrock

I bought this game on Steam, but regardless it is a game that anyone who loves classic, Eye of the Beholder style games should own! There are only like 15 levels but between the combat, secrets, and exploration it lasted a good two weeks of playing after work and almost all day on the weekends! Plus, the development team is supposedly building a mod interface and might be adding new levels! This game was not only great but has a promising future as well! Get it, or you are missing out on a classic-in-the-making!

I wanted once again to experience the feeling I remember from days long passed when I played stuff like Ishar or EoB. This game reminded me of it and for a price of few dollars... I am satisfied.

I played squared dungeon crawlers long ago (Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Bard's Tale, Black Crypt, Ishar, Lands of Lore, Captive, etc...). I replay these games time to time (thx Dosbox) and I often regret this genre. Grimrock has been the answer, and now I wait for the second opus quite impatiently !! :D

I'm a bit torn - on the one hand, I love the return of old school puzzley dungeon crawls, and I think the game does a good job of it. Unfortunately, I can only play for short periods, because the flicker of the torhces is apparently triggering my migraines (it seems to be mostly when they're about to go out). Designers couldn't know that (I would never have guessed it myself), and they shouldn't be penalized for it, but if you suffer from migraines, I recommend you try it for a bit before you buy, or make sure you can return it.

This is basically what I was expecting, bringing back memories of Eye of the Beholder and other classic dungeon crawlers - which is to say that this is a very good thing. Easy to get into without reading the manual, always feeling like something new is right around the next corner, waiting to find that next spell - all good. Based on longer play time my rating may go up or down, but so far I am not disappointed.
