Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Beautifully made, lovingly crafted

The attention to detail in this game is incredible. The map, the architecture, everything is there with purpose. The artwork is gorgeous. From maps to the frescoes on walls and vaulted ceilings, to shop signs and tapestries, it is a labour of love, and it shows. It is a complex game with a decent learning curve. In the beginning, Henry feels awkward and almost useless, and can be quite a grind to subsist in this medieval world. But once you start getting the hang of the game mechanics, and honing your skills, it becomes quite a lot of fun. Sure, it's got a few bugs, but these days it is hard not to see those in a game of this magnitude and ambition. As the game gets patched, these have been going down, and making the game experience better and better. There's quite a few excellent mods out there as well, that help you customize your game experience further. The combat system is very enjoyable. The variety in weapons and armour is great (although there can always be more!) The story is interesting and the quests are varied enough to not feel super repetitive. It also has a gives you a good ammount of knowledge about medieval life and particularly, Bohemian history from the period. I am eagerly awaiting a sequel to KDC, which I know will be even better!

GOTY 2018 candidate, may even win!

KC:D is the first Act of what was intended to be a 3 Act storyline. It turned out to be Acts I & 2 combined in the end, with Act 3 to come as either a future DLC, or more likely, a second game. It is an RPG that goes back to the principles of RPG from over a decade ago, which ironically, makes this refreshing. You can (and will) die. There are no dragons or magic fireballs. You are human, and at the beginning of the game, you are an older teenager with all that goes with it - you think you are great, but the reality is you are pretty useless at just about everything. You need experience, practice, and you need to learn...just about everything. As a blacksmith's son your character can't even read. Getting your first sword and facing your first enemy thinking you can 2 click kill him will quickly teach you the error of your ways. Doing so will most likely mean you have to go back to your last save, which, due to the (in my opinion brilliant) save system implemented, could be some time back - it is much harder to save scum your way through this game. The game saves when you sleep or when you drink a shot of special schnapps. It will also occasionally save when you complete a quest or take on a new one. The best way to save is through the drink, but you don't start the game with any - although a very early quest will give you some. Once they are gone they are gone. You need to buy more. They are expensive. You are a poor blacksmiths son. Or you can make them through learning alchemy. Alchemy is a very useful and profitable skill - but remember you are a teenager who knows just about nothing. You can't even read. If you drink to much (save too often) you will quickly become not just tipsy, but fully out of your mind drunk, and all that goes with that - some serious debuffs, strange vision, and one hell of a hangover. Drink too much too often and you'll even become an alcoholic. That is just one of the controversies in the game however. You'll either love it and appreciate it for what it is, or hate it for inconveniencing you when you mess up. There's a hot topic at the moment about how historically accurate it is. How it treats women in the game, and why there are no blacks in the game, and so on. Ignore all this drama by today's snowflake SJW crowd, and enjoy the (racially diverse by the way) game for the amazing experience it gives you. The combat, lockpicking, pickpocketing, alchemy, archery, horse-riding, armour systems are all in there and debatable. The freedom to make choices and mess up. Most impressively however are the sheer variety of ways you can go about things, and depending on how you go about them will impact how people in the world react to you, and how you proceed in the game. There are certain major side quests, that you can miss entirely or "fail" and get a totally different outcome. The team don't care you haven't seen the hours and hours of work they must have put into the fantastic scripted version of "succeeding" at a quest in a certain way, if you don't go down that path this time you may next time. It is fantastic as an experience. I'm on my second play through and I've enjoyed it second time around even more than the first - and discovered literally dozens of quests I missed first time through, and some of the ones I actually DID the first time through the second time around I approached in a different way and got a different outcome. I'm 145 hours playtime into the game and can easily see a further 100 hours of game time to come. Them bugs! Oh yes. There are bugs. Quite a few of them, although the major ones have mostly been patched out already and the team behind the game are still working on patching up more on a regular basis. Despite the bugs and some are (or were) truly annoying, it STILL shouldn't distract you from this fantastic game. If you are any way inclined towards RPG and want what passes in these times for an adult game of consequence and choice, then this truly beautiful game is an absolute must buy.

Clunky combat, unfair difficulty

The games difficulty(even the lowest) requires you to save-scum every single fight. The combat system is clunky at best and enemy attacks hit you regardless of were you stand. Dude smashes his club a meter next to you in the ground, you dead; guy swings his sword AWAY from you, doesn't matter he still hit you. Combine this with terrible savepoints and normal saves being limited by consumable items and you have an attrotious experience that is not worth your time or money in any way.

Not what I hoped for

Ive been following this for a long time, even bought the preview version. I though to myself " Finally a True Medieval RGP! " Unfortunatly what they had was a great combat system and then put a game around it. The story as far as Henry is concerned is soooo cliche. The Pick Pocketing is arcade. The dialouge is modernized ( the first recorded use of the F word was mid 1500s the game takes place 100 years before that, just saying ) The fast travel isn't bad. I'd rather have that then teleporting, but it kinda reminds me of Sea Battle ( if anyone remembers ) were your cruising along and then suddenly stops for an encounter. I laughed so hard the first time it happened, I even did the warning sound from Sea Battle out loud. So if all your interested in is the combat buy it by all means.

It's Hardcore, Gritty, & Emotional

I had been on the edge about this game for some time. Im glad I bought it I'm absolutely hooked! its hardcore, its gritty, its emotional, and its captivating. I usually dont have too much fun with games that simulate having to eat, sleep, all that jazz but this game executes it perfectly. I've been craving that medieval era lately and this just pleased every bit of that craving. I'm running this game on a msi gv62 8rd and its going pretty good. I'm not getting more than 60fps but ive not had any issues with the 4 or so hours I've already invested. You guys killed it with this game.
