A sophisticated shooter laced with gallows humor. Killing Time is no shallow grave. Its depth is well-conceived. Puzzle solving and strategic thinking are placed at a premium. The visceral violence is complemented by paranormal graphics and a super(natural) storyline. Killing Time is a fright-fest for the true aficionado of first-person corridor mayhem.
OST in MP3 format is included! (Check inside the folder called "Bonus")
Features:
Listen to the remembrances of the 7 video-real apparitions and ghostly guests. They offer clues as to what past heinous acts actually transpired in the cursed mansion.
Look up and down - turn around with a complete 360 view. The three-dimensional mansion offers outdoor areas, staircases and intricately detailed ceilings and floors.
The original music makes this old haunt strongly inviting, eh? But beware. Every room, every passage in the estate holds dreadful dangers.
Enjoy continuous gameplay with no load time between areas.
It's not a bad game, and this port isn't broken or unplayble. But growing up with 3DO version with better FMVs and audio kinda makes this the weakest version of the bunch. That said I'll proably get the remastered version sometime soon.
This game is a unique one. I won't repeat too much of what the others had said but those in-game talking ghosts are really nice. The atmosphere of the game is well done. I think it makes the game a rather interesting one to just jump in, run around, shoot-some-things and explore a bit. Definitely worth it to most players at 2$. I remember it was a little scary and uncomfortable when I was a child, to play, but even now it has a certain aura of coldness which can be appreciated for some time.
This isn't a port of the 3DO game, but rather a remake.
Some of the charm is lost in translation. The enemies and weapons are now CGI renders, instead of digitized sprites, and the ghostly entities that serve as in-game story progression are very blocky, and ill-defined. That said there are a number of improvements, areas are larger and more complex, and the frame rate is smooth. The controls are spot on. If you can play Old school Doom with it's default controls, you'll have no problem with this game, as it controls identically. One of the more novel aspects of this game, is that it's an open world FPS. An unheard of thing back when it was first released.
Aside from a few engine quirks, like momentarily getting stuck on a piece of scenery, and a useless jump feature. There's very little to complain about here.
One of the troubled results of the short FMV era, and rated one of the 'worst' for years, the original 'Killing Time' over time was found to be glitchy, but worth the tweaking and not so bad by many who played this. There are community mods and fixes available, as well; I began playing it myself a few years ago: NOW we have the 'Resurrected' (updated) version, that does remove most of the issues and brings it up to date for everyone to play. Only beware, there's some serious clipping, overcome by a 'cheats' section in the menu if this becomes a problem -- otherwise another 'win' for Nightdive I think! I am really enjoying this, and give it four stars that would be five but for this clipping that is why one door I found won't open; a sprite's standing directly behind so blocking it. There may be other similar parts of the mapping like this; just turn on the 'no clipping' cheat and move along, then turn this off again. Autoaim also seems not to function, at least with my gamepad; this game is great otherwise. Also includes being able to choose the PC or 3DO characters, even switching mid-game: Myself I prefer the pc version, as more 'eery' and 'realistic'. Lol.
Finally, this is only a personal note, that part of the charm of the original was the OLD FMV, pixelated like the old movie style of the game itself; but it certainly looks and plays Better in this latest version from Nightdive, at GOG here: HIGHLY recommended, especially for those into ghost stories, pre WWII decor and drama, and now a GOOD FPS game!
I do hope Nightdive will earn one more star by fixing the clipping, autoaim and any other issues I may find; but only these I noticed at the time of this review. Oh, and the 3DO 'ducks' show up more often! Lol: Have FUN everyone! :-)
Not a lot of people knows this was a completely redesigned version from the 3DO version. This was a rather unique Doom clone. Unlike most of them, Killing Time had one gigantic map with sections. This plays more into classical music in the 1950s era. At the same time, bringing Egyptian mythology.
You get to fully explore the entire island. There's plenty of surprises on the way. The controls takes a little time getting used to. It's essentially an metroidvania style boomer shooter. You would be surprise how filled these sections of the map are with enemies. Overtime this game simply pulls you in.
