Description
Kenshi is an open world, squad based sandbox RPG set in a brutal sword-punk wasteland. Gameplay is open-ended rather than a linear story, so you can play as a settler, a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave... or just food for the cannibals.

But first things first, you need to survive. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors, carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive. You are not the chosen one, you’re not great and powerful, you don’t have more ‘hitpoints’ than everyone else and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Customise a solo character or a whole squad and train them from puny victims to master warriors
  • Survive in an unrelenting world of slavers, cannibals, wild beasts and famine. Nowhere is safe.
  • Build your own fortress, research technologies, craft your own gear and wage war with other factions
  • Explore and scavenge the uncharted lands of one of the largest single player open world maps to date
  • Absolutely no level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you and the game won't hold your hand.

lots of crashes and bugs

Great gameplay, but 70 hours in come back to base and its been erased. Apparently a common problem, and no fix without a backup save. Also the game crashes about every hour or 2, so if you play quicksave a lot. If an error saying save file corrupted pops up when you load, try to reload a previous save because all of your non-character progress may be gone. It is not my computer, i dont have these problems with any of the other games i play.

As empty and dull as the desert

Kenshi is a squad-based survival game. It is a sandbox game where your only goal is to survive in this harsh world. It seems very little effort was put into game design. They created a world and tossed the player into it, without caring about how that will work out. You start with a character that is too weak to do anything interesting. The only reasonable thing to do is mine copper, which is as exciting as it sounds. You can speed up the game, but the first few gameplay hours will just be mindlessly staring at your screen and occasionally hauling ore to the store to sell. You may try trading next, only to discover that there is no proper economy here. Prices of goods are randomized per city at the start of the game, and do not change afterwards. There is no concept of demand-supply. Cities also do not produce goods. Goods pop-up out of nowhere at the end of each day. Buying raw materials and selling manufactured goods is not profitable as goods tend to sell for less than the purchase price of the raw materials. The world is huge, traveling takes a long time, yet there is nothing to explore. You may find cities, villages and outposts, but NPCs rarely have anything interesting to say, any lore seems to be very well hidden and scarcely developed. Combat is solved mostly automatically, and since training your character takes a lot of grinding, is not really rewarding. The punishment for losing can be also quite high. Maybe if you are willing to spend 100+ hours doing dull stuff you might reach some interesting tidy bits, but I do not find it worth it. Whatever this game does is done better by dozens of other games like Mount & Blade, Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld, so you can just skip this one.

10/10 game but...

It's a good idea to get it on steam instead. Most mods are only on the Steam Workshop, so if you ever want to mod the game you either go steam or go home.

had my legs eaten by lanky fogman

Kenshi is surprisingly not that hard to learn, but it sure it hard to master. You'll find yourself starting from scratch over and over to simply get a hand of things and get yourself a better start. There is no quests or anything like that in Kenshi. There is a large world and many factions, enemies, and locations to explore, befriend, and defeat. But the world of Kenshi doesnt revolve around you, you are nobody, you have nothing, and you quite literally have no skills. You'll have to do many activities to raise your stats... such as, mining, making yourself over encumbered to raise your strength, getting beat up to raise your toughness, running a lot. If you dont train your character you will die, because everyone is faster, stronger, tougher, and smarter than you in kenshi. unless you train and train and train. kenshi is a particular experience, and experience that ive grown to love.

immersive world

what can be said about this game that hasn't already been said. Its really what you make of it, you can be an explorer, trader, base builder, bounty hunter, etc.. it is set in an entirely handcrafted world with a huge variety of ecosystems and communities that can be explored for hundreds of hours. It has a huge modding community and regularly receives patches from the developers (if you're worried about how it runs). I cant say this game is for everyone, but if its appealing to you despite how different it is, you should really give it a chance.
