Description
Kenshi is an open world, squad based sandbox RPG set in a brutal sword-punk wasteland. Gameplay is open-ended rather than a linear story, so you can play as a settler, a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave... or just food for the cannibals.

But first things first, you need to survive. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors, carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive. You are not the chosen one, you’re not great and powerful, you don’t have more ‘hitpoints’ than everyone else and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Customise a solo character or a whole squad and train them from puny victims to master warriors
  • Survive in an unrelenting world of slavers, cannibals, wild beasts and famine. Nowhere is safe.
  • Build your own fortress, research technologies, craft your own gear and wage war with other factions
  • Explore and scavenge the uncharted lands of one of the largest single player open world maps to date
  • Absolutely no level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you and the game won't hold your hand.

One of the best open world sandbox RPG's

Playing the game at 4k on a 3950x with a 5700xt on full max, and the game runs smooth! Everything looks really amazing too, people might say the graphics look bad, but with everything maxed at 4k, the game looks amazing. The planet the game takes place on is a barren planet, like what you might think a post apocalyptic planet would look like, but it also has a lot of beauty to it, with lots of colours and different biomes to explore. The game looks especially good in battles! I've seen hundreds of guys battling it out, with blood covering the ground all around them. Body limbs are laying on the field of battle. Dogs are running around playing with the limbs as they get hacked off. Guys are crawling on the ground, some are bleeding out trying to get away, crying for help, others are not giving up, still fighting while they crawl on their broken legs. The game is almost like a Mount and Blade kind of game, but it's not a clone. If you like an open world sandbox game where you get to do what you want and create your own story, whether it's be a thief, merchant, farmer, assassin, army leader, slave master or abolitionist, bounty hunter, or all of the above. What's also great about the game, is that no matter what you want to do, you'll have to deal with challenges to be successful at it, so you have to "work" at achieving becoming what you want to be. It's not handed to you, you start with nothing for the most part, and have to become what you want to become. It's a great game if you still have your imagination, because you are creating your own story with your own choices. It's why I started to play computer games when I was little to begin with. With games like Fallout 1, I could do what I wanted, instead of the linear games of the arcade and console. Awesome game that stands out above others. If you can play with everything at full max, do it, it really does make the game lots better!

Thanks for the demo on the lofi site!

This game. It is a brutal survival simulator 'experiment,' and is super raw in terms of today's very fluffy game experience standards. I've played the demo for maybe 5hrs and just bought the game for 20 during the sale, it seems well worth it by this point. If final fantasy as an RPG is Windows, then Kenshi as an RPG is Linux. Feels like the game that Planesacpe: Torment's developers would dream about playing. Also, it feels more like your using developer tools than most games, able to manipulate the camera so much in these huge vast landscapes, which I appreciate. The player, for all intensive purposes, becomes the director of their own apocalypse film. Oh, and it's a brutal as hell movie, to be sure. Definitely a game for those wanting a different take on the wasteland then other franchises have been delivering, a more hardcore experience. The game is super gritty. My first character lasted a good few weeks before being bled out on the sands, pecked to death by mutant bird-creatures. This was while fleeing slavers with my friend, heading through the countryside. My friend could have gotten away, but I had him be a hero, double back to try and draw the birds off. He got eaten alive. No room for sympathy in the wastes. Second character (because my first one DIED, and fast) saw an ally becoming crippled from a (series of) fights, and we had no splints, and were in the middle of nowheres. You can still crawl when crippled. My other character could walk. Do I leave them to crawl, or carry them? I ended up carrying the wounded ally and all the goods we collected night and day, and through this my character's strength and athletics became amazingly high - so high that when a gang of bandits tried to ambush us and he dropped everything (including his friend) and ran, the bandits couldn't catch a thing. Just another day in the wasteland. I would highly recommend playing the demo, to get a feel for the game style, since it's quite...unique.

Surprisingly great

A bizarre mishmash of elements that somehow come together to make a genuinely great game. There's definitely some jank, but it never brought down the experience for me. Wandering through cannibal infested plains littered with wrecks of city sized machines and my robot companion comments that he was been born there, long ago.

A pit of despair and extasy.

This is a hidden gem for most casual players. It is a well-thought game. You drive the story. Your nature will directly affect your playstyle and your character. It will be as miserable and fantastic as you are willing to be playing it. I warn you. It has a pull of a large black hole. It will keep you glued to your screen. Then, suddenly, you realize that it's morning, you are late for job/school/cult meeting and you just started to walk to a neighbouring town with your gang in Kenshi.

Slow start, but a fun time sink.

Honestly I have barely left the first town. Early days are research grinding, resource grinding, stat grinding, and a lot of running away. I see where it is going though and I am not in a rush. I havent even decided how to take over the world yet. Not an easy game by any stretch, and frustrating in the extreme if you are not refreshing your quick saves regularly. Yet this is still a positive review.
