3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

The shooter I didn't know I wanted

Ion Fury is phenominal, level design, gunplay, and movement all feel great. I'm impressed by how well 3D Realms and Voidpoint have made use of the Build Engine, 4/5 stars because of the devs unfortunately planning to remove some fun and quirky voice lines to appease a demographic comprised of people who won't even play the game in the first place.

Re-review(my older review was deleted)

- Ion Maiden is a fantastic game not without its flaws. The controls and aiming are tight, movement is solid, art and spirits are top notch. This is the most advanced and best technical of any Build Engine game. It is not better than Duke and not anywhere near as good as Blood. Shelly and Heskel are good characters, both voiced well. Music and audio is great. Shelly does need an alternative bubbly voice and a busty alt model for 90s fans. - The arsenal Shelly has is decent but feels lacking. Ion Maiden is lacking a true Inventory system, the only 2 items she has is a medpack, and a 5+ sec radar that shows where the enemies are. she has a few Quake 1 style powerups she can grab that only last for 30 sec. Here is a massively missed opportunity Ion Maiden had; Shelly needed a bigger inventory system and even an upgrade system where she could swap out different gear she is wearing. The possibilities of being able to upgrade or change armors, gadgets, gear would help increase repeatability. She needs more features. -This leads into my next issue, the enemies. all of them are designed and look great, their AI is well designed too. The issue comes with their visibility, most of the enemies perfectly hide no matter the level, now this makes sense and would easily be solved by an item or gear that would allow Light Amplification or a tactical visor item. Their voices are too low, their colors are too dull, there needs to be a bigger variety, and the flying units are THEE most dangerous and will kill you easily if you aren't paying attention. again, an item to help you pick them out easier would be good if you keep the dull style. The roaster doesn't change up until about half way. Her weapons are for the most part standard, there is a lack of standouts. With the vast open maps there is a great need of scoped rifle or something with zoom to pick out well hidden enemies. She needs a few new sci/fi weapons and to replace the redundant ones. No Rocket Launcher? GTFO

I picked this up after seeing Kilg0re play it a bit and it reminded me of old school FPS games. Graphically it's beautiful and how it feels is really good. Some nice secrets and approaches to objectives and a very polished first chapter of the campaign so far. Cannot wait for the full release and definitely recommend it if you think it's your style of game!

Retro FPS done right.

Brilliant gameplay that improves on the classic Build Engine games, beautiful sprite work (the guns in particular look really good) and complex level design that manages to maintain the flow of the action, create a mood and keep you attentive while you look for specific paths and puzzles. Music is good too. If you like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Blood and other old-school FPS games you really need to play this.

Properly evolves the classic formula

I think it's telling that the low reviews still acknowledge that Ion Fury is a great game. Ignore the complaints about censorship, as they really, really don't matter. Despite very little being changed, Ion Fury's gameplay remains fully intact, as does the vast majority of its art. Along with AMID EVIL, Ion Fury succeeds in not only perfectly capturing the old-school FPS style, but learning from all of the mistakes of the games it's trying to harken back to. Here you won't find just an excellent first episode, but the entire game is steeped in excellent design, interesting levels, and fantastic gunplay. I dare say it's the _most well-rounded Build Engine game *EVER* made_. This game stands on its own as a fantastic modern FPS, even if its clearly trying to bring back days long past. The developers have clearly poured an immense amount of effort and passion into their game. It really is incredible. And I don't think removing a bottle that says 'OGAY' changes any of that.
