3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.
Welcome to ION FURY!
Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
True tracked module music!
Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!
I really dig this. Movement feels so fluid and guns sound and feel incredible. I would say this is one of my favourite NEW retro fps games. Soundtrack in my opinion is freaking fantastic, old school dark drum and bass goes so well when blasting and spraying lead all over the place.
Minor gripe is that gog version does not have achievements. Would be cool to have them someday perhaps on this store front also! (this is just a minor complaint, i can enjoy games without modern fluff features. It would be nice to have them though)
The game is amazing what they were able to do with the build engine is nothing less then stunning The voxels and sprites are top of the line, the game geniunley inspires awe for me, Its a classic released in the modern age well worth your money, the secrets are ellaborate and not easy to find then theirs the easter eggs which had me smiling when i found them, The combat and difficulty remind me more of shadow warrior then duke nukem or Blood except this doesnt have jokes that havent aged great and can come off as tasteless. Its a must have for any retro fps fans or fps fans in general a must buy!
I think the game stands truly on its own merit. It's a good throwback to 90's style FPS games, very fast movement and precision aiming that is immensly enjoyable. There are so many damn secrets I think I only found around 20% of them and the game easily warrants several playthroughs.
As for the developers or publishers caving to the so called moral busybodies of the gaming industry (resetERA im looking at you) do what duke would do and give these people the middle finger. It does seem the devs or publishers have updated and said they are not going to cave and censor the game so good on you guys!
The game is easily a 4.5/5 I think there are some nit picks I could make about the game but its really minor stuff like the clusterpuck seems rather redundant with the bowling bombs. Even my son (12) jumped on and played an few level and had alot of fun. Overall this is an easily recommended game for me. Lets get a few more games like this I would gladly pay for more games like this.
If you're not much into shooters and are used only to modern military shooters, you might not think too much of this, but it's carefully crafted game design is going to suck you in and get to love it soon after.
I wholeheartedly recommend getting this is if you've enjoyed the likes of DUSK, Hard Reset, and of course, the originals (Duke3D, Blood, Doom and Half-Life). This one has a Deus-ex/hard reset vibe to it, it nails the dystopian futuristic cyberpunk atmosphoere, and still packs in a lot of 90s movies references as its predecessors did, although much more obscure ones.
I've only gotten through half-way so far but I can already recommend getting it even for the original asking price, it's that much fun to play and since it's carefully crated level design, it's more fun to try and find secrets, or replay the levels differently. You don't have much choice in terms of arsenal, but as limited as it is, it's very satisfying gunplay. Character movement speed is spot on, as are health and armor pickups (not including obscure secrets). If you didn't hone your aiming skills on older shooters, you will have trouble with ammunition in Ion Maiden (yeah, it's still Ion Maiden, it's just in the title art and on this page, it's still Ion Maiden for us ;-) ).
Runs decently well on modern integrated graphics and APUs, haven't been able to retrofit it in a duke sourceport on period age hardware but it should be doable when ... I mean if I get bored with replaying this masterful piece of game design.
10/10 to 3d realms and void point for pulling off the best intentionally obsolete 3d engineering and level design with this.
