3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

Stunning, but with one weird issue

Out of all the Retro FPS games that came out in recent years ( Dusk, Prodeus, Hedon, Project Warlock, so on and so forth), Ion Fury is the one that looks and sound the best. Not necessarily the best in terms of gameplay, but the presentation is out of this world and it truly feels like a game that captures the 90s essence. Using the build engine( the very same that was used for Duke 3d, Blood and SW back in the day) played in my opinion a huge part in this. The soundtrack is also stellar and has a lot of diversity. I said the gameplay is not the best necessarily but make no mistake, Ion Fury is very solid and satisfying, with excellent gunplay and fast movement. There's just one problem that I hope the team can solve in the dlc: the enemy AI. For some reason, the enemies can't stop getting stuck to the walls, which makes them kinda helpless and not very dangerous. You'll notice this immediately in Maximum Fury, where the enemy speed is augmented ( leading to even more wall hugging). There are other smaller issues ( like the spiders being way too quiet imho), but the wall hugging is the biggest, as it truly makes the enemies way easier than they should be. Overall, this game is a solid 8/10. With a couple of extra guns and smarter enemies, it'd be an easy 9

Eh. It's okay

Bit overrated, honestly. Level design is interesting, the music is pretty good, and the nods to 90s FPS games are fun, but it doesn't feel particularly good to play. Weapon reloads are too common, and are especially inconvenient when dealing with enemy swarms. Weapons feel weak and lack punch, and resources are too scarce for my tastes. Plus, the writing is bad. Like, I get that that's the point, but it isn't even funny bad, a lot of lines are very cringe worthy.

Fantastic Build Engine Game

I've had my eye on this game for a while and played a good chunk of it, through another store, before changing to get it on GoG for no DRM. Along with many others, apparently, I was dissapointed to hear a future classic marred by the outrage mob and upon hearing that it would not be censored I decided to jump in and enjoy this modern marvel of game. How this dev team made these maps in the build engine is beyond me and I'm happy to buy it.

Its a Build Engine game.. expect badass.

My favorite games were Build Engine games, and this is a pretty strong successor to the legendary likes of Duke3d and Shadow Warrior. I feel like the aiming on all axis didn't translate into this one as well as it did in stuff like Brutal Doom, but its still very good. The game will help you with distant shots but you really want to experience a build engine game by charging right in. It has lots of the nice little quirks in the environment you can interact with (FLUSH THE TOILET, TURN ON THE LIGHT SWITCH), but it feels like there are some missed opportunities to hide secrets on some items. Speaking of secrets, there are LOADS, and I'm usually really anal about tracking them all down, but in Ion fury I eventually gave up and moved on, but the game is nice enough to tell you if you are missing anything before reaching a point of no return. All in all, a very good game, and I hope to see more cool Build Engine work from the teams!
