3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

Good but with issues.

The game is a blast. There's fast-paced frenetic action and great audio and level design. However, I have a few major gripes. The main is the damn skull-spider things. There's just so many that they ruin gun-fights constantly. I'll be fighting my way down hallways and large courtyards, then just get killed because these mostly silent irritations finally whittle me down. Secondly, there doesn't feel like much time was put into some of the weapons. Most of them are fun and it's great you can still use your early weapons later on, but the bowling bomb for example just isn't doesn't seem to live up to its potential and rarely seems to actually home in on targest, instead it's just rolling around uselessly until you pick it back up more often than not. I guess there's something going on with censoring, but I don't stay up on video game news much these days, but that does seem pretty spineless of the devs to bend to a couple of lily livered babies on the internet. This on top of the whole Iron Maiden malarky really shakes my trust in them to push the envelope or stand up for themselves ever gain. Good game, but sometimes you have to ignore the whines of the oversensitive, and also realize that people are tired of small swarms of stupid, little insect enemies. There's a reason not a ton of people are screaming for another Serious Sam game. Those spide-skull things really are frustrating.

Incredible Game - 3D Realms Masterpiece

Simply a wonderful game that harkens back to the days of Duke Nukem 3D and Blood; the Build engine. If you like these old-school shooters, you'll love this game!

Eh. It's okay

Bit overrated, honestly. Level design is interesting, the music is pretty good, and the nods to 90s FPS games are fun, but it doesn't feel particularly good to play. Weapon reloads are too common, and are especially inconvenient when dealing with enemy swarms. Weapons feel weak and lack punch, and resources are too scarce for my tastes. Plus, the writing is bad. Like, I get that that's the point, but it isn't even funny bad, a lot of lines are very cringe worthy.

Authentic feel of the old FPSs

I love it, I grew up playing Duke Nuken 3D and Doom and it genuinely feels like an old school FPS, I guess using the build engine contributed a lot to that, but it has nice additions, like the possibility of headshots, that as far as I know weren't in the engine back then. The level design is really cool, they are big and with lots of things to see, I read people complaining a bit about the AI movement and I agree that it could be better but for me it isn't even close to be bad enough to impact my enjoyment of the game. About the reviews, there was a review bombing after people find and the company remove a couple discriminatory assets that a dev had put in the game, so don't mind the "censorship" statements some people made here.

Something missing.

I loved it in the first few hours, which turned into mild amusement, which turned into being bored of it before it was over. Maybe that just means the game outstays its welcome, but I don't think that's the problem for me. If you haven't played any old shooters in a while I can see why this would be an interesting novelty, but as someone who does still play and replay them on the reg, I didn't find Ion Fury to have much interesting to offer. If it came out in the 90s I can only see it being a solid 7/10, even then. The weapons and enemies aren't very unique or exciting. A basic arsenal with nothing that really stands out to me, and some of the same enemies just come at you repetitively (like the robot headcrab things). There's not enough variety there. The indoor environments get a bit dull after the first few levels, with large outdoor areas offering a nice breath of fresh air before you're quickly funneled back into corridors and tunnels again. A lot of the game's humour falls flat and some of it is just perplexing (or maybe I don't get the references?). It does things right too. Movement speed and freedom of movement for example are perfect, and you can get into a very satisfying groove during combat when you're jumping around the maps. The basic enemies die quickly and gib, and the game makes you feel like a badarse. It has all those simple pleasures down fine, but this is like the minimum I would expect from a retro inspired shooter, and it wasn't enough to sustain me through the whole game. There's just something missing from this one.
